Korean hairstylist / salon recommendation: JUNO HAIR EDAE #2

Where to do hair in Korea? Korean salon recommendations? Where to perm hair in Korea? Good Korean salons?

Finally got to writing this. A lot of people have asked me about doing their hair in Korea and I’ll be fielding some of the most common questions and also giving a recommendation, right down to the outlet and hairstylist lolol.

Q: Is it expensive to do hair in Korea?

A: Depends on where you come from? For me, I think it’s a lot cheaper compared to Singapore. Obviously there are places that do it at the same price, but the quality you get in Korea is MUCH HIGHER. Haircut average at 25,000won (SGD30), coloring at 100,000won onwards, perm / magic (straightening) at 150,000won onwards – average prices. Unless you go to a Cheongdamdong salon (think super high end neighborhood), then perhaps you need to pay .. a lot more?

Q: Where are the good places to go?

A: If you are a girl, I suggest going to Edae (Line 2 on the subway), and come out of exit # 2 or 3. For the uninitiated, Edae is the neighborhood or area right outside Ewha Womans University. You know, where girls gather, this means you get a lot of fashion boutiques, cosmetic stores, salons, manicure places etc. So basically everything you need is there. And I believe all the places there are good, if not they would have run out of business. Besides Edae, Myeongdong is a good place to do your hair too (: It’s likely that they have more English speaking stylists!

Q: Do they speak English??? What if I cannot communicate with the stylists?

A: Yes, most of them do. Well, at least the places I’ve been to. The standard varies, but you can get by. And they try really hard to communicate with you, so don’t worry. The place I go to seems to have a lot of foreigner customers, so they are used to it. Basically you don’t need much communication, unless you are the kind that are super picky and particular on how they do your hair and have all sorts of requests. All that is needed is point at the hairstyle you want (they give you a book full of pictures of the latest celebrity hairstyles to look at), choose. Ask how much and they will punch in the figure in the calculator for you. hehe. Done.

Q: Is it intimidating to walk into a Korean salon?

A: Erm no? Maybe I have a biased answer, since I can pass off as a Korean and I speak Korean. Usually the stylist won’t know I’m not Korean until I introduce myself or show too little concern regarding the style I want. I have realized that Koreans are quite particular about what they want and they usually go into a salon knowing what they want to do. I’m always like “okay whatever, you decide ok?” and some of the stylists were like .. “MMMM don’t you have something in mind? You foreigner?” lol.

Q: How’s the service?

A: Damn good? I always hate going to SG salons, because 1. expensive 2. they can never give me what I want 3. they like to tell me I cannot do much to my hair since I don’t have nice hair -.- Korean salons never tell me what I can’t do, they try their best to give me what I want. And I don’t have to wait like an idiot while the stylists serve many other customers and just come back to me to cut my hair in like 10 mins -.- Korean stylists are super attentive and they make you feel like you are in safe hands.

For those who are still a little apprehensive and unsure of what it’s like, here’s a breakdown of what goes on in a hair salon visit! (I based it on my visit to JUNO outlets)

1. Go to the counter and tell the person you want a cut / perm / magic / coloring etc. Say that you are a foreigner. Well, unless you obviously look like one.

2. An assistant will take your belongings from you to put them into a locker and they will help you wear the salon cloak. The belongings will be locked and they will put the key in your cloak pocket. I usually take my phone out beforehand so I have something to play with in cased I get bored.

3. They are likely to guide you to a side area where you are seated. They either ask what you want to drink or give you a small menu to look at. The drinks are free (for JUNO at least) and I usually ask for iced green tea lol. The stylist will come to you with a book / ipad full of celebrity hairstyles. You take your pick and discuss with the stylist here. Ask for the price during this stage, unless you totally don’t care how much you are spending.

4. The assistant will bring you to wash your hair and then you are seated in the erm salon seat (you know, with the mirror in front of you). I don’t think I need to describe the whole do-hair process right?

5. Go to the counter. You take off the cloak and the assistant will get the key from you and give you back your belongings. Make payment!

See! Quite easy (:

Time for a more concrete and detailed recommendation right? 😀 I usually go to JUNO HAIR, which has a lot of outlets all over Seoul and Korea. I’m not going to discuss whether boutique salons is better than chain stores whatsoever, just go for what you like. Among the bigger salons, JUNO HAIR is quite reasonably priced. I made the mistake of going into another major salon (the Gangnam outlet) just for a quotation, and I am totally like omfg so expensive. haha I cannot remember that salon name, sorry. JUNO HAIR also have a free membership program where you can get discount for their services.

CYMERA_20130916_121610

Like many major salons, once there are a lot of outlets, standards vary. I’ve been to several JUNO HAIR outlets across the city and the one that I like best is the one I’ve just visited: Edae Juno Hair Outlet #2 (click on link). Well, it’s not the prettiest or most stylish outlet but I really like my stylist there, and also the assistants!

I did magic (straightening) to 2/3 of my hair and perm 1/3 (the ends) of my hair, permed my fringe so that it will curl in slightly instead. Normally this will take 3 hours or more, but my stylist is damn efficient. “Fast with my hands and good” – quote from her. hahaha. I went after dinner (nearly 8) but she managed to finish before 10 and she did it even better than my previous stylist.

It was good to go in the late evening, cos there weren’t many people and the staff were more attentive. hehe it’s good to be a foreigner who can speak Korean. hahaha. I think they find me very interesting and my stylist even got an assistant to stay back just to help me do straightening. Apparently he’s the best in it in the whole shop and yup I agree!! Super detailed and attentive.

Had a good chat with them and they even gave me free treatment on my hair!! ^^ Super happy.

Stylist: 시우 (Si Woo)

Assistant (who is damn good at straightening): 김국현빈

(haha i asked about his name and apparently 김국현 is his real name and 빈 is added on as a nickname hahaha)

hehe if you look at the JUNO site (link above), you will see that there are many compliments for my stylist! So rest assured that you are in safe hands, and yes she can get by speaking English!

시우 is off on every Tuesday and you can book an appointment with her at 02-364-0605. Walk ins are possible (I did) but doesn’t guarantee that she will be free.

You can tell her that you saw the recommendation from this blog ㅋㅋㅋㅋ Not sure if she remembers me though!

Now for directions.

There are THREE Juno Hair outlets just in Edae and usually I go to Juno Hair #1. But I much prefer this #2 outlet!

준오헤어 이대 2호점

서울시 서대문구 대현동 37-3

It’s quite easy to get there. Come out of exit 2, walk all the way straight until you are near to the Ewha Womans University main gate. Instead of crossing to the gate, turn left. Walk down the street, past Kosney etc until you see Juno Hair Outlet 3. Turn left in the straight and walk a bit to see Juno Hair #2.

I’ve attached the Naver Map image if you are interested. It’s located on the 2nd floor of the building! Shops in Korea are ever changing. I went at night so I didn’t notice if there was really an Evisu outlet below, but yeah.

“3. they like to tell me I cannot do much to my hair since I don’t have nice hair -.- ”

This is one of the things that nobody likes to hear! Haha! Never tried getting a haircut in a foreign place. Maybe I should next time I visit Tokyo or Seoul. 🙂

I’ve been in Korea for a long time, but I’m scared to go to a regular Korean hair salon. My hair is WAY different from Korean hair, so I don’t think they can do it. Their techniques (magic straight, etc.) absolutely won’t work, so … 🙁 It’ll just really damage my hair. But one of my friends with Asian hair goes to JUNO and highly recommends them too. I think foreigners with different hair textures should be super careful, though.

ahh yeah now that you mentioned it.. yeah it may be hard for those with non-Asian hair. People have been recommending Lucy Salon in Sinchon! Apparently they are good with non-asian hair too. Maybe you can check it out!

I was in Korea for only 2 full days and decided to have my hair done. I did my research beforehand and read your blog post. I followed your instructions: went to Juno outlet 2 and asked for 시우. She couldn’t speak much English but luckily, they had a Korean client at that time who speaks perfect English so she translated for me. 시우 suggested a hairstyle for me and it was awesome! They also gave me 10% off…(I don’t know why.:/). Thanks so much for your recommendation!

Hi! I was searching for good hair salons in korea as I was planning to get my hair cut there in the spring. Thank you so much! This post was extremely useful to me 🙂
Can you give me some useful phrases or words (in korean) I can learn to use at the salon? For example: I want my hair cut until here (and then point at the length) ? Thank you very much!!!

Hi Melissa! Thanks for liking the post!

mm it may be worth doing a post on it! haha but knowing me, I’ll take quite long to get it out so here’s some phrases in the meantime

앞머리 좀 다듬어 주세요 – please trim my fringe
여기 까지 자르고 싶어요 – i want my hair cut until here
염색하고 싶어요 – i want to dye my hair
파마하고 싶어요 – i want to perm my hair

If you have specific phrases that you want to know, let me know!

Worst experience ever in Juno Hair salon!

So we read about how good they are on internet and all the blogs that recommend them. So me and my friends went to one of there salons , the one in Myeong- dong. We went with high expectation and ofcourse ready to get a real korean hair makeover.
The place was nice, seems professional and great service. So we meet up with one of the head stylist Name KO EUN. Seem really nice and ask us what we wanted. My friend wanted a short hair cut with perm so it would look like all the korean Kpop male singer. Me I wanted cut my hair little bit shorter like chest length and perm that are big wawes/curls. So she asked us if we wanted the perm with extra treatment for the hair wich would cost some extra so we did.
For my firend who had a male cut and perm it costed 240 000 won
And for me chest lenght cut and perm with big waves 360 000 won

It was really pricy I thought but then again you will have the most beautiful hair like all the korean actress/singers so we thuoght it would be worth it and also because this place is so famous and had such good reviews! But oh so wrong we had!!!

The stylist( same Ko Eun ) cut both me and my firends hait, then she starts helping my friend with the perm, and for me she let one of the traine(!) works with the perm, I didn’t realize it first because I thuoght she would do the perm and the traine was only there to help her, but then she did came to me for about 5 minutes and then leave the rest to the trainee again. And when it all was done 2 traniees blow dry my hair and wel itt looks nice I guess, not really super nice like I hoped but ok. I had better with so much less the price.
But still I was ok with it and my firends hair was really nice and she was really happy with her hair,
We paid the money total 600 000 won( = 530 usd maybe)

So this was on saturday and they told us not to wash the hair until the day after.
So on monday I was my hair and blow dry it and BAM! It was Straight!! Like my natural hair which is always straight like that. No curls or any Waves at all!
I new that something was not right, I had done perms before couple of times both with big waves and smal curls and never has it disappear like this just after 1 shower? Just like when using a regular curlmashine and when u whashed it it will disapear.
I was really disapointed and wanted to go to them right away but couldn’t becoz I was going to have a surgery on that day and after the surgery I had to rest couple of days.
And about my friend it was the same the waves was gone after one shower and she couldn’t go to them right away neither coz she had surgery too. So on friday we went to the salon again and meet the stylist Ko EUn .
This is when the service went from 5star to zero!
She regonize us and I told her about the problem. And this is what her excuse was my hair was yo dry and I shouldn’t blow dry it becoz the curls will be straighten out she told me to let it airdry!? I told her i don’t have time for that, Im a busy woman who wants to do the perm so I will have nice hair after the shower, do a little blow dry and then go to work. i dont have time to do any styling or put any wax on to make the curls be curl? I mean i had have perms before and ofcourse it will look nicer if you put some effort and time to it when blow dry your hair but if you only blow dry it it will still be curly not straight! She had tons of excuses and told me its not god if i would do the perm again and when i wanted my money for the perm back she suddenly couldn’t understand me and then have her phone to me so I could speak to one of her own costumer who could speak a little bit english. The costumer of course said same thing as the stylist and also told me that te stylist would do the perm for me again for free but. I have to pay the extra treatment so i wouldn’t damaged my hair! I refused and also when I told about my friends hair ( she was there to but was to tired after the surgery to argue) and she just had bad excuse that my friends hair was to thin?? Like first she had excuse for my hair was damaged and now my friends hair is to thin? And the she just didnt mention anthing more about my friends hair. And didn’t talk to me and just went to work with her costumer. and I even let then washed myr hair and they said it is waves anf curls when the hair is wet! But not when its dry! The saw it with their own eyes yet they refused to pay us back! Or even wanted us yo pay extra if we wanted a treatment! It feels like the thuoght we where tourist and wanted to ripped us of and let the trainee do the job and then charged us overprice!

So now Im really mad and don’t know what I should. Do , coz if. I do the free perm but no treatment then my hair will be so dry and if I don’t i feeel like im being ripped off!!

I m really mad and just want to let you guys know before you chose a saloon like this!!

Ohh… I want to get my hair cut in Korea!! In the photos, Juno salon looks very professional & cozy! Love!! Yeah, I am so fed up with salons in Singapore. Charge so much but never giving me what I want, always saying “cannot” & “it’s all about styling” when I show them a photo. Truth is, they are lousy.
