18 In Korean learning journey (:

The 3rd anniversary!

Another misleading title 😛
I’m talking about my relationship with Korean! ^^

The real anniversary should be on 8th Jan, but I was too busy to blog. Time flies, and once again, I’m really awed and glad that I’ve persevered on my learning journey. In the first 2 years, I’ll sometimes wonder if I’ll give up Korean due to so many other commitments (school work, personal life etc). But right now, I think I can safely say that Korean has been too integrated into my life that it’s impossible to give it up totally. I may neglect it once in a while, but it will always be there with me. It helps that I major in linguistics. ^^ It’s kinda related, so Korean will always be at the back of my mind.

I’m really happy to meet a group of friends (both online and offline) that share my passion for the language. I’m sure some of you have the experience of being told ‘what’s so nice about korean?? O.o’ and I treasure the people to whom I can talk freely about my interests 😀 Each of you are my motivation to continue learning Korean ^^

감사합니다.

    Yay for your 3rd year!

I read that blog piece ‘stop studying korean’. Man, the guy sounds a little bitter and resentful.

yeah i know. wonder why he’s still in korea if he has such negative feelings and stuff. alot of the others actually share his feelings >,< when i was in korea, i felt that everyone welcomed me and being able to speak korean is a plus. i get loads of compliments, and sometimes even freebies hehe.

It’s ironic how he’s married to a korean. Oh well, it could just be his writing style and
just choosing to harp on the negatives. XD

I experienced the same thing as you did. Speaking the language definitely made me feel closer to the people too. And they are so happy every time they come across a foreigner who speaks Korean.

Who is living in Korea but writes that he isn’t going to study the language? That’s really strange. Wouldn’t it make communication just a little bit difficult? I know from my own travels that once you leave the hotels and tourist oriented restaurants that English isn’t spoken so widely.

I have defnitely heard the “perpetual foreigner” complaints about both Korea and Japan. I think because both countries are ethnically/racially homogeneous they just won’t accept people who aren’t of the same ethnicity as actual members of their societies. I used to think this only happened with non-Asians, but after reading stories of the difficulties non-Korean women married to Korean men face, I think it really does apply to all non-Koreans to some degree.

I remember reading a story about a Vietnamese family that had lived in Japan for over a decade and had mastered Japanese and even taken Japanese names (legally changed their names) and still people were so amazed that their children–born and raised in Japan and attending Japanese schools–spoke fluent Japanese. (As if speaking Japanese were some Japanese-specific genetic trait.)

yeah i’ve heard alot of such complaints and once or twice, I experienced it myself. I don’t think I’ve been in korea for a long enough period to make a fair judgment though.

How strange. 8 Jan would be my 3rd year too! 🙂 Did you start at SKS? Perhaps we were classmates.

Anyway, happy 3rd year anniversary! 🙂

I think there was only 1 class for our batch. They opened 2 classes for E1 after our batch. So yes, tt shd make us classmates! I’m bad with names though, so I don’t remember. My name’s Albertina though. Haha.

Hmm… Yea, I was with a short-hair girl and we tended to sit at the back. But strange, we did continue on to E2. Hopefully one day we’ll meet and we’ll find out! 🙂

You said that we were your motivation to continue learning Korean, and I’ll say that you’re my/our (the readers) motivation to never to give up. I’ve been studying Korean on and off from since about summer 2007 and I know that I’m not as good as you are at Korean. But, reading your blog and others always encourages me to keep going on. Anyway, 써주셔서 고맙고 3주년 기념 축하합니다 (I hope I said that correctly).
