[Korean Slang] 돗자리 깔다

After a number of filler posts, here’s something related to Korean!

———-

HAHAHA.

Chatting with a Korean friend and we decided to a mini exercise where she will give me a Korean phrase that foreigners won’t usually know of and I’m supposed to come up with an example sentence.

Today’s phrase is 돗자리 깔다

I took the phrase literally and came up with

소풍가면 그늘에 돗자리를 깔아서 쉬는 것은 최고예요

FML. hahaha.

돗자리 깔다 means “spread a mat”. But apparently there is another hidden meaning!

Referring to Daum 지식, it means:

  • good at making predictions
  • good at guessing the results of something that has yet to happen

An example:

와, 어떻게 알았어? 너 돗자리 깔아도 되겠다..

hehe. My example sentence?

넌 항상 돗자리 잘 깔잖아. 그래서 낙제하겠다는 말 하지마. 난 이번엔 합격하지 않으면 네 탓이야!

Her feedback:

It’s a little awkward when I used 잘 깐다. Because it’s not used in the sense of 잘깔다 or 못깔다. A better way of phrasing the sentence will be

너 돗자리 깔아도 되잖아. 이번 시험에 나 어떻게 될 거 같아?

My friend explained the phrase as 돗자리를 깔고 앉아 돈을 받고 점을 봐줘도 될만큼 신통하게 잘 알아 맞춘다

———-

Interesting right??

We have been running the exercise for quite a number of days and I have so much to share with you guys!! 😀

Learning loads~~~! The difficult part is not about understanding the slangs but using it in a sentence.

Probably won’t be blogging anymore until 2013! ^^

Hmm, where do you think the meaning comes from? Like, a psychic sitting on a mat and making predictions? Do psychics sit on mats in Korea? Haha!
