Some of you may know that I’m a big fan of Big Bang but the truth is that I love and listen more to indie pop compared to the popular pop. Big Bang is in a separate category since the boys are sooo talented and awesome 😀
Anyway indie bands are undervalued and most people, including Koreans, don’t really know about them. So here’s some of my all time favs and also some new finds ^^
1. Biuret (뷰렛)
Biuret is a all girls indie band and also the my first exposure to Korean indie music. The girls have powerful vocals and the their lyrics are inspiring.
2. Fatdoo (팟두)
The epitome of good music + entertainment. The songs have some common qualities: weird/cute narratives, sound effects, entertaining lyrics and a story behind each song. You get quite a bit of course language here too, but I love it!
3. Bye Bye Sea (안녕바다)
All boys indie band. Their concept reminds me a little of Taiwan’s Sodagreen, which I absolutely adore. I can’t decide whether I love Qingfeng’s or Namu’s voice more. They have been around for quite a few years but recently gained more attention to their cameo in Playful Kiss (장난스러운 키스)
4. Rimi
A recent discovery! Totally my kind of music. I dunno why, but I love narratives in songs ^^

27 September, 2010 at 5:50 PMah, hi! i’m so glad that you posted this! do you know any korean indie rock bands? it seems that a lot of times korean indie bands just sound like normal korean bands that haven’t been signed to a big label yet. i’m looking for musical diversity here and all i find is 120bpm synth/dance music, ballads, or american rap rip-offs! i just want to hear something that doesn’t sound the same as everything else! it all starts to sound the same and i think it will kill me.ㅜㅜ

28 September, 2010 at 7:53 AMYeah, 빅뱅 was one of them and 티아라 has a song by that name as well. I don’t remember the artist names for the other two, but I came across them on the show 도전천곡 (Challenge 1000 Songs). If I recall correctly, one was a trot song and the other was a ballad.

I like listening to less popular K-Pop as well, maybe not indie, but artists like Sunday 2PM or Vanilla Lucy
