[High Cut Interview Dec 2012] Kang Dong Won Part 1.2

NOTE: This is the first time I’m doing such a translation, so phrasing may be wrong and I’m really not too sure of certain parts ^^;; Just practicing. It’s so long I’m going to break it into a few parts. 예쁘게 봐 주세용. Let me know if I translated something wrongly

Read Part 1.1 here!

“What will be your comeback project?”

002-10

Q: The thing that I’m most curious about is “The future plans of Kang Dong Won”

At first there was going to be a summer project after military service, but it has now been postponed to a later date. Instead, a new project has come in and we are in talks. But no decisions has been made.

Q: Is that Director Yoon Jong Bin’s <군도>?

Yes. Right now I’m considering <군도> and it is a project that I can join in in the fastest possible timing.

(note: Kang Dong Wong has now confirmed this project. There seems to be many English translated titles floating around: Band of Thieves, Archipelago, Way of Warrior etc)

Q: What will be your next project after that?

This is a secret. I have decided to do the project but before I signed the contract, it’s still not something set in stone. In any case the next project and the next next project is almost confirmed.

Q: Even if you can’t tell us the title, give us a hint.

It will all be action, I think. Of course, even though they are both action, but character wise and story wise, very different.

Q: If you want to start working asap, it’ll be faster to join a drama instead of a movie.

I have no plans to do a drama.

Q: There are many cases of artistes moving from the big screen to the small screen recently.

I don’t want to go into dramas.

Q: The last time you filmed a drama was in 2004. Is there some kind of trauma?

Yes. When people talked about nightmares, they talked about dreaming that they had to do the college entrance exams again or having to go to the army again. To me, doing a drama again has the same kind of feeling. The stress was enormous. I don’t think I can endure that.

Q: Is it because of the overnight filming hours and the last minute scripts?

Suppose, if I receive notice that “The cafe scene is being written now”, I have to go to the cafe and wait there. And half of the script will be out. I have to read it once, memorize it and go into shooting. ugh. I don’t think I can endure that. Also, I am not fond of melo and in dramas, there are almost no shows without melo. But the recent drama <Golden Time> didn’t have too much of it.

In any case, I’m not trying to say that compared to the big screen industry, drama broadcast is not as good. Of course dramas have their own strengths. It’s something that everyone can easily access, many overseas viewers and you get instant feedback. But I still find the fact that I can’t prepare for the shoots and the rush of time too difficult and I really can’t do it. (laughs)

Q: So it will take quite some time before your comeback movie is shown on screen. During this period, there won’t be any official chances to meet your fans right. These days, there are many interesting variety shows, do you have any plans to go on them?

I don’t have any plans for variety shows. And I don’t really have anything to say. I don’t like it to have my image being used this way. I want to save it and then express it more in my movies. I hope that the focus will also be linked to the movie. I hope that I can exclude all other private and personal stuff and also avoid commercialization. Of course I feel a little suffocated. Sometimes I want to talk about this and that and at times I also want to talk about my political inclinations. However, although it takes courage to say things that you want, it also takes effort to refrain from saying them. If I am engrossed in shooting movies, I can give up on other things as much as possible.

to be continued…..

After reading this interview, I have even more newfound respect for him. It’s not just the fangirl in me, but I think we have similar character. ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

PS: Are there any clear differences between American English and Singaporean English?

    Hello, Shanna!

I just wanted to thank you ever so much for taking the time to translate such a lengthy interview! I’ve been following Kang Dong Won’s work as of late and it’s such a treasure to find material in English. I thought I’d have to wait until I’m fluent in Korean in order to know what’s in his mind. And that’ll take a while. 😉

Also, I’ve been browsing your blog and I want to congratulate you on your hard work , discipline and dedication to learning Korean. Keep it up!

I like how he thinks. Thanks for the translation. Very good job! Anyway, I feel he is like me too.. maybe too creepily alike… and I’m not just being ‘fangirlish’ about it.. besides, i’m way too old to act like a naive, innocent fangirls.. 🙂 But being a fangirl does make me feel younger..

Thank you so much for your translation of this interview. I know I am late as it is already 2014, but I am a new acquired fan of Kang Dong-Won.
I am still young but far more older than the usual fan-girls of pretty boys; it is just super refreshing to have such a talented actor who is also very good looking (and also, is not to fused about his looks as opposed to his craft). I mean, I first noticed him in Woochi where I felt in his acting that he is someone who seems to like having fun and enjoys acting (he does not at all try to look cute or hot or handsome, he is just natural on screen). Then I realized his passion for acting more when I saw Maundy Thursday and Secret Reunion. I really hope he will make more films as he does not like dramas too much; which I respect. Plus, he likes experimental and daring movies, i.e. Duelist which is not a film that is easily recommendable to people into genres.

To be honest this is the first interview ever of his that I have ever read, lately, you see I try to stay away from these because I want to experience their “craft/ work” more. But I happened to read an interview between Jang Hoon (dir. of Secret Reunion), Song Kang-ho and Kang Dong-Won which I really enjoyed. I really like Song Kang-ho and Korean films for their beautiful and fascinating genre-blending/ bending stories (I am more partial to Jdramas/ Jdoramas).

Anyways, before I ramble incoherently and drift into different topics, once again thank you for the translation. Hopefully there will be a future interview with him where he gets asked about his passions, principals or philosophies or approach towards his craft, and who he’d like to work with in the future.

      Hi Jovi!! (:

Glad you enjoyed reading this! (: I totally agree with you and like you I first noticed him in Jeon Woochi but I think it was Maundy Thursday that really made me like him a lot. Love his interviews and even though he’s totally not a smooth talker, I love how real he is and how his personality is like during interviews. He’s just refreshingly honest and true to himself, something that I aspire to be also.

Agree that it’ll be awesome to read more about his principals or approach towards acting, hopefully we’ll get more of such in depth interviews (:
