Away from the comfort zone

Previously, I mentioned that April was a very Korean-filled month where my Korean capabilities got expanded and while I still think that my Korean is better than before now, the peak is and always has been the time when I’m in Korea.

Speaking Korean in Singapore just doesn’t feel the same.

Do you guys feel the same?!

May is even more Korean-filled. ?

Anyway, just to share some news with you guys.

I’ve started work again and ended my too-free freelance life. ? To be honest, there were times where I worried about having a longer-than-expected break but I’m so glad that things work out really well in the end.

I’m happy where I am now 😀

I won’t say too much about my work here.

It’s not the first time I work in the Korean language but previously it was more of like translation and proofreading and simple emails while now … the capacity and variety have expanded. 😀

I’m thrown out of my comfort zone but omg I think I work best in such an environment. The fact that I have freaking loads to learn everyday makes me extremely happy and excited. Being forced to use the language is the best way to improve. It’s not the rote learning, but the application and usage that really push you forward.

It’s doubly exciting that I’m gaining new knowledge via a foreign language. And while I’m gaining new knowledge and learning, I’m also learning and improving my Korean proficiency. 😀

I’m also going back (somewhat) to my initial roots and interests before the switch to become a humanities students and a language person. So now, it feels like I’m getting the best of the both worlds (:

(Pls do not try to make guesses on my workplace in the comments section – I’ll remove and edit the parts haha)

I think it’s amazing how over the years, I can function longer and longer in Korean. Many years ago, an hour-long phone call in Korean would have me totally drained but now I can survive a whole day work in Korean (and go home to sleep by 11pm lol).

There’s loads I have to improve on and I need to work reallllyyyy hard ^^

All in all, I’m super glad to be given an opportunity to pursue what I’ve wanted to do. For a while, I was lost but I’m so glad that everything has fallen into place. Just want to record my feelings here to remind myself of how grateful I am to be here and how happy I am to meet great bosses and to remind myself to hang on in times of downs and to remember how I felt when I first started (:

    Hi Shanna,
I just recently discovered your blog through web browsing for Korean learning resources (I’m planning on starting to learn Korean this summer). After reading through every single one of your Korean textbook reviews, I’ve discovered many great beginner textbooks and resources to start my Korean learning journey. I’m wondering if you would be able to make a blogpost about the specific textbooks and resources you yourself utilized when you first started learning Hangeul. I know you’ve already made a video on recommended textbooks for beginners but I’m wondering if you could share the ones you used. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us!
