A guide on self studying Korean? :P

Feeling pretty tired these days and I just woke up not too long ago (omg it’s nearly 11am ㅠㅠ). I promise myself that I’ll make full use of my holiday and time at home to study Korean. So I shall be really hardcore and do a 11am-11pm Korean immersion/blogging. Obviously that will include reading Korean novels, maybe blogging, maybe doing an audio blog and maybe writing on the e-book.

Some of you guys may know about the plans I have for an e-book of some sorts. There’s so much I can write in there and you guys may have seen the earlier sample that I released on “Internship in Seoul”. I originally wanted to be an all-in-one HANGUKDRAMA book but it’s too much, so I split out one section and it’s going to be: How to self-study Korean. Stupid title really. I don’t want it to be a HOW TO book but for the lack of a better idea…

A lot of it is going to be my own experiences, tips and it will really cover most aspects of learning Korean 😀 From scratch, to beginner, intermediate and maybe advanced. I’ve finished writing the “from scratch” part and now writing the beginner part 😛

Should I release the sample?  ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

In any case, I have work out what can go in and what can’t. And I’ll probably email the publishers if I want to include photos of textbooks etc. I’m totally being paranoid and making sure every single content and photos (of Korea scenery so far) are my own. I guess books (no matter in what format/free or not) is different from a blog??! Right?? No idea ><;; Any advice on this will be much appreciated! Anyone in the publishing sector?

The main reason I thought of a book is because I can’t expect people to comb through 800++ entries and erm my categorisation is not exactly the neatest OTL. And I want to put everything together and hopefully that will be helpful to all Korean learners ^^

In any case, I’ll just continue writing it in my free time! I need encouragement ㅎㅎㅎㅎ

Hopefully it will be released somehow. Sometime.

Will you be interested in reading?

I look forward to reading it, you’re the ultimate self-study success story (tongue twister haha). But have you considered making it about self-studying language in general, instead of just Korean? I’d imagine the methods used to learn one language would apply to most others. That way the book could benefit more people.

ㅋㅋㅋ I did think of it. I try to keep my advice/tips general but sometimes I really have to go in detail for Korean. And somehow I feel that I shouldn’t give advice on self studying languages in general because I’m still not good in Japanese 😛 Feels like I’m not qualified to do that yet XD

Wow your really persistent on your korean studies. I keep on pushing myself and gladly I’m improving, but not at the speed I want to because school life is always interrupting.
If you don’t want to name your e-book ‘How to smth smth…’, maybe you could describe it like ‘Advice from someone you self-studied/is self-studying korean’ or a little more sensational ‘(The) adventure of self-studying korean’.
I guess it’s a work title so until you finish it their is still plenty of time thinking about the title or even after you completed it.
And in the end what matters is the content not the title 😉
I’m really looking forward to it!

I’m endorsing one ebook guide on Japanese in one of my websites right now. It’s exciting to know that you are thinking about making your own ebook for Korean. Keep up the good work and keep on inspiring the rest of us! Though I sure wish that I have a job/business that simply requires me to keep on learning languages!

Congratulations on your e-book coming together!
Please bear with the geekiness, but since you asked about ownership of contents: Text and pictures etc. are automatically covered by copyright unless it is specifically stated that they have another kind of ownership such as a creative commons licence (sometimes known as copyleft). You can use copyrighted material (e.g. copy less than a certain percentage of a book) without clashing with someone’s rights for as long as you give them credit for having created the material.
The quick explanation of copyright (marked with the C we all know): nothing is allowed unless the rightsholder allows you to use something – there are a few exceptions.
The creative commons (marked CC and four little pictures) everything is allowed unless the license specifically states that something is NOT allowed (shown with the little figures). This license is often used by people who just want their material to reach the rest of the world – be it music, books, video or something else. Getting a license is very easy and can be done online. Each creator can decide whether other people can earn a profit from their material, if the contents may be altered by other creators and so on, so you can “customise” your ownership by saying what others are not allowed to do with your work.
It definitely is a lot easier if all the pictures are your own since a picture of a copyrighted work is considered a work in itself, but your publisher should be able to guide you because the details will depend on where you publish ^^
Have you considered how you want the ownership of your own e-book to be? It sounds really exciting ^^

Thanks so much for sharing!!! I really didn’t know there’s so much to consider. ><;; I'll love to include photos of textbooks in the book too, but I'll check with the respective publishers. If it's too much trouble, I'll just keep the book to my own experiences / tips etc. Unless there's a publisher willing to help me, I'll probably keep it free too (avoid all the unnecessary trouble and also I hope it can reach more readers). ^^ Thanks again!!

I saw yes to this! 😀 It’s always good to have different ways to study and to MAKE SURE you pick up learning material and learn. Sometimes the hardest part of self-study is actually picking up something and doing it instead of looking at it and saying, “I’m gonna do X… right after I finish this.” I’ve done that tooooo many times just to get nowhere. XD
