7 In Japanese learning journey (:/ N2 Journey

Yay to increased Japanese reading speed!

My Japanese reading speed seemed to have miraculously improved 😀

Okay, maybe not very miraculous, since I have been reading in Japanese everyday for the past month or so. But it’s not like a a deliberate effort (and it doesn’t feel as if I “consciously forced” myself to do it) so it does feel like the improvement is a surprise.

I guess this is why I believe that language learning should be about interest and fun and you should willingly want do it. That is also how can improve the fastest and most effectively.

I’ve been spending around 2 hours a day reading in Japanese (commuting time..) and have been doing it for nearly 2 months. I have also been in immersion mode (Japanese radio / songs / anime all the way) so I guessed that helped too 😀

Spending commuting time reading also helped to make me more relaxed after a tiring day or to prepare myself for the day ahead. So it’s really killing two birds with one stone.

I’ve taken to noting down in the first page of the book the following:

  • the date of purchase
  • start date of reading ~ end date of reading

I guess I just want to look at my books fondly 10 years later and be happy that the younger me wasn’t totally a lazy bum. ><

Psycho Pass 2: 2015/01/30 – 2015/02/14

L Change the World: 2015/02/14 – 2015/02/20

I cannot believe I finished a Japanese novel within 6 days!! Okay, I did have more reading time during this CNY holiday period 😛

I loved loved loved this book! Brings back lots of memories as I used to be a rather big L fan in my teens hahaha. I loved him so much that my friends actually bought me a Death Note notebook (I haven’t written anything (or any names) in it… I think? hahahaha kidding)

I loved the movies too. To be honest I don’t really remember much of it, but I remembered that I find the last movie L Change the World to be underwhelming and kinda bad. So I’m super happy that the novel is very different from the movie (no dramatic explosions or whatever exaggerated scenes). It’s a lot more nuanced, funny and poignant at the same time. The major themes of the story are still the same, but major plot differences. The time frame is to record the last 23 days of L’s life and the novel really captured L’s character growth in the last mission of his life and as a reader, I could feel the significance of the time period – something that the movie failed to deliver.

Psycho Pass is aaaamazing as usual ^^

I’m going to move on to the NO.6 series <3 I’m probably going to slow down my reading speed and savor each and every line. ^^

I’m not sure if I’ve asked this before(I’m actually a 70 year old in a 17 year old’s body) but mind sharing your method of reading these novels? Haha I usually tend to read once and it’ll take forever because I’ll pause and check every word I don’t know then lose track of what I’ve read. >.<

I used to that too but now I just check the unknown vocabulary at the end of a page, or maybe when the paragraph ends. that was I dont lose the picture I originally had.

I used to do two readings where I would read on and highlight difficult words without checking and then reading a second time where I would check up all the highlight words. So I always have two bookmarks in a book (eg. one at pg 80 and the other at pg 40). But I don’t have time for that now so I combine the two in that if I’m out I’ll just highlight and read on (eg. stop at pg 34) and when I’m home I’ll start from pg 35 and then highlight and search up the words as I read. (:

wow I seriously dont know how you manage to focus on a text for 2 straight hours. From a statistics point of view people can concentrate in studying for 29 minutes and be able to process all they take easily, after that it will be hard. but, you go for 2 hours.
    IMPRESSED

oops not 2 straight hours. I usually do 1 hr on the way to work and 1hr back home ^^ I can only read for 2hrs straight if I’m at home and that’s quite rare hahaha. Mm but reading is still slightly different from studying 😛 I have short attention span when it comes to studying ><
