Why I’m so happy to know Korean

#notserious post

Hangukdrama gets a new look again! ^^ I’m pretty happy with this new layout, so it will probably stay for quite some time! I hope you guys like it too!!

I have been slacking in my language studies, so I have nothing much to say about any progress or the lack of. I’ve been enjoying the “fruits of my labor” and all I do in my spare time is watch dramas.

For a period of time I was genuinely sick of k-dramas and the offerings out then didn’t fit any of my tastes. But now I have Heartless City, Shut Up Flower Boy Band to keep me super super happy. And when Master’s Sun comes out, I’ll be happier. It better be good.. it has to be good… it’s So Ji Sub 😛

Just the other day, it struck me how much I appreciate knowing Korean when I watched this video.

It’s damn hilarious and I wonder if I will find it as funny if I had relied on subs instead. Probably not. It’s twice as funny because I know No Hong Chul was trying to imitate makeup gurus and the way he dishes the tips (the style of language he uses, the vocabulary) is so authentic it really cracks me up.

Maybe learning languages will make us happier because it allows us to get access to a wider range of entertainment hahahaha. Am I bullshitting? heh

Seriously, I watched that video like 4 times already. I cannot stand the 코맞춤 part hehe. 찌릿하게 ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Maybe I’m just easily amused.

Haha, I definitely have to agree with the idea that part of the fun of learning a language is having access to a wider range of entertainment. For me, I love crying my eyes out to incredibly sad Korean films. I can’t really stand sad films or sentimental overly sentimental English language films, though.

By the way, thanks for sharing the video. It got my day off to a good start!

hehehe I love crying my eyes out too! Sometimes when I feel a bit 답답하다 I’ll go look for a good sad Korean movie. I bawled my eyes out for 우리들의 행복한 시간 and 헬로 코스. Any good ones to recommend?

I cried so much at 우리들의 행복한 시간 too! Towards the end when he utters the word 누나, I always break down.

For underrated sad movies, I recommend 새드무비 with 임수정, 정우성, 신민아, 염정아, and 이기우. (I’ve seen it more than a dozen times, but I still can’t help bursting into tears towards the end.) For well-known movies, I strongly recommend 슬픔 보다 더 슬픈 이야기 and 내 머릿속에 지우게 if you haven’t seen them already. 장화, 홍련 (starring 임수정 and 문근영) is also good. It’s not cry-your-eyes-out sad, it’s more psychological than your typical sad movie.

When it comes to TV shows, 고맙습니다 (with 공효진 and 서신애) is a favorite. It’s not spoiling anything to tell you that 고맙습니다 is about a little girl with HIV, so that’s just a taste of what you can expect from that drama.

보석비빔밥 is also good, but a little slow paced. I’ve been told by Koreans that it’s an 아줌마 drama (because it aired mid-day instead of during prime time), but I feel that it’s been underrated because of that. It doesn’t have the usual everyone-lives-happily-ever-after ending, so that contributes to the sadness (and frustration) of it.

Ohh I haven’t seen any of the ones you mentioned, will have to take a look. 임수정 is definitely one of my favorite actresses. She just has that sense of aura that I love and this sense of effortlessness in her acting. 😀

She is one of my favorites too! But I feel like she has a ‘type’. It’s always seemed like in a lot of her movies she plays a very innocent, very pure, very feminine roles (as in ‘새드무비’, ‘행복’, ‘미안하다, 사랑한다’, etc.).

When I see her play different characters like in ‘김종욱 찾기’, ‘내 아내의 모든 것’, and ‘전우치’ I absolutely love it!
