The last time you wrote

When was the last time you wrote?

Nope, not a Facebook post, not a tweet, not a WhatsApp message.

And nope. Not the stuff you scribble on a post-it note at work or the stuff your teacher asked you to copy down from the board.

When was the last time you wrote a substantial paragraph or more of your thoughts? Something reflective, meaningful or fun?

I know I haven’t done so for a long long time. I do like “penning”down my thoughts, but mostly on online platforms like this. Not on Facebook though, I get quite turned-off by majority of what I like to call “try-hard” posts where they seem to be more geared towards gathering likes / comments rather than heart-felt thoughts. (okay I am just cynical and maybe I’m also being a try-hard here)

Being ill (for the past week and likely to continue for some time) really forces me to slow down and be more aware of the things around me. One night, I couldn’t sleep so at 6am or so, I ended up looking through my Tumblr and it struck me that the micro-blog I had over there was reflective of my interests and thoughts at various points in time and life.

Suddenly, I was struck with the thought that I had missed out so many memories in my life because I didn’t write them down. As I was reading what my past self wrote, I felt strangely surreal at how I have grown (in some circumstances) and how in other ways, I am a shadow of my past self.

So now I’m obsessed with the idea of getting a journal to write in daily. I think I would also want to keep a proper scheduler for next year. Best to separate the two I guess. However, I am very anal when it comes to stationery, so until I find a journal I’m happy with, I can’t start. -.- Sorry, I also cannot stand myself. A plain notebook just won’t do for me :/

To distract myself from my bodily troubles, I have been packing and digging out stuff from drawers and boxes I haven’t opened in years. Found old christmas cards, special mementos, photos etc. Feeling all nostalgic. ><

I also found notes I had taken when I was in school. Found stuff from elementary school (P6) and stuff from high school (JC).

Ahh, the memories. ><

The brown one was an adventure journal that comes for free with a CD-rom game The Oregon Trail. hahaha CD-rom. I miss those days, to be honest.

I used it for my science notes in P6 and it helped me for PSLE (first national exam students take in Singapore) too lolol.

I am very amazed by my 12 year old self because…. I read through some parts again and I was like “hey I didn’t know that”. My 12-year old self was more knowledgable.

My 20+ year old self cannot name the anal fin of a fish lol.

It’s so cool to see my old handwriting though. Totally different from how I write currently! I can’t believe I actually wrote all those stuff out. I guess I always love to consolidate the stuff I study and then make my own notes.

This 100+ pages binder file contains mainly my Chemistry notes during high school days. This is also one of my most prized possessions (lolol), because I am always amazed by how I managed to do all that. ><; The stuff in there were taken from multiple sources (reference books, online references etc) and then consolidated, so it was not like I blindly copied from a source.

I still remember how I would have a book on my lap, another on the left and perhaps another on the right and then checking out all the related info for a particular topic before writing the notes. ;;;;; This is why I always strongly believe that I used my brain the most during high school days. hahahaha. I was the most hardworking back then and since then, it’s a downward spiral hahahaha.

My handwriting was different back then too! I think it was neater then >< I used to like Chemistry back then. Not really the super super love type of feeling, but I did enjoy the theory part of the lessons (not a fan of doing experiments). I remember liking balancing equations and then studying organic Chemistry.

Yes, I’m very nerdish (you should know by now).

But now, sadly, I don’t remember A. SINGLE. THING.

Another area where I am more amazed by my past self.

I think I have digressed from my original topic.

In any case, I think I would try to get into the habit of written journals. Won’t it be interesting to flip through them 10 years later? Personally, I think people who carry a notebook with them everywhere and jot down random stuff are super 매력적.

Do you write? (:

Your handwriting in your notebooks are so neat and colourful! I agree with you that it would be nice to have some journals to reflect back on, but I find that I can’t write more than a few sentences before my hand gets tired and the legibility of the words go downhill…

Thank you!! 😀 hahaha sometimes I just scribble (and my scribble really looks terrible) but with a journal or a special notebook, I think there is slightly more incentive to write nicely.

p.s. I love your blog URL! And all the best with your new job!

I had a similar experience when I cleaned out my room several months ago! I was looking through all my science and maths notes and I was like “…?! Who was this?!” xD

I write letters to friends from various places. But reading your post, I realised that I don’t ever really write about myself (if blogging doesn’t count). So perhaps I should journal too :/

Hi Chantelle! hehe high 5! xD
It’s nice that you are still writing letters! I love receiving letters through the post. Perhaps I should start writing to people too(:

You really should! It’s a nice feeling. I also love writing letters because I love hoarding letter writing stationery xD If friends are celebrating birthdays I am also usually more inclined to writing a birthday letter instead of a card, especially if they are a close friend ^^

I love writing when I’m in the mood to, or when I’m studying for something. I find that it takes me a lot longer, but it makes me feel more close to my writing. I have notebooks for Korean and Japanese that I like to add vocab and grammar in. By the way, your handwriting is so good!

Oooh you are learning both languages too? (: When it comes to foreign languages, I think it’s so important to write and get used to it. I realised that I can type better in Japanese but when I write, I get all confused with the long vowels etc or what not (because of the lack of the ‘predicted words’ function) >< Thanks for leaving a comment and I love your blog header image! You two look great! <3
