Studying Japanese with subtitles

Thanks to Orbiter, I now have a new resource for studying Japanese – JPsubbers! It’s supposed to be subs that you download and play together with the raw drama file, but I’m using it a little differently. Treating it like Dramanote, so I’m actually reading it as a text file and studying from there. HAHA.

Just finished reading the entire subs for episode 1 of 夜行観覧車. If you haven’t seen the drama, please go watch it. I think it’s very much grounded in reality, and explores issues like the divide between the elite and the normal but lines get blurred and essentially you realize that everyone is still very much the same and all families have their own troubles. The divide is an issue that is present in a lot of Korean drams, but is usually treated superficially or over-dramatically (cues rich family opposing to the son’s marriage to a normal girl). 夜行観覧車 does a nice job of weaving the past and present in a tight storyline and the story centers on the one incident that seemingly is the cause of change but yet isn’t the case as we delved deeper into the drama.

In any case, highly recommended! ^^

hehe not sure if it’s because it’s a recent show that I watched or that I really liked it, but I find myself able to remember all the scenes and most of the dialogue (in Japanese) in the 1st episode ><;; It was a breeze to read through the sub text and check out the new vocabulary. Paying more attention to the speech style this time, since it’s all dialogues and different from reading a piece of text.

Quite tempted to get the book after I’m done with 白夜行! (this drama is also based on a novel) Speaking of 白夜行, I’m now 200 + pages in! Forgot quite a bit of the story already (since I watched the drama quite long ago), so it was a good memory refresher!

I should get back to reading Korean novels though. I am still left with half of 전우치 3. I’m only at book 1 of 대한민국사. That is a difficult series to work through.

ohyeah. And of course the 강동원 magazine spread ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

That sounds like a fun way to study or at least an interesting way. XD And the drama sounds interesting as well! I haven’t seen a Japanese drama before. Well, I started to watch one but then I just kinda stopped… I’ve been thinking of giving them another try though. 🙂

Have you watched 最高の離婚? It is so good it blew my mind to smithereens. The characters… the dialogue… the acting… I am actually worried that I cannot stomach Korean dramas after this, with their cliches and one-dimensional characters (save for some diamonds that are oh-so-rare). 最高の離婚。。。一押しだ!!! 見ないと後悔しますよ。。。

This is an awesome resource, thanks for sharing! Speaking of Itazura na Kiss~Love in Tokyo, do you happen to know where I might find Japanese subtitles for it? JPsubbers doesn’t have it, and I haven’t been able to find them anywhere else. I really just want to read it like a text file, as you mentioned in your post, but Dramanote doesn’t have it, either 🙁
