[Review] SNU Korean 5B Workbook

Again, another book that I wished I had maybe 3 years ago.

All I can say is that Korean learners these days have it a lot better – more and better resources which are increasingly easily available.

I have always been relying more on textbooks, not because I don’t like workbooks, but because many of the workbooks were expensive and a few contained irrelevant (to a self studier) open-ended exercises that keep asking for your opinions / group work and don’t give you answer key at the end -.-

But, I found a great workbook now, thanks to Twochois.

Besides the excellent please-buy-it-now textbooks that SNU is churning out, the workbooks are good both used together with the textbook and as a standalone.

Review of the 5B 서울대 한국어 Textbook

Once I flipped through the book, I knew that the book is what I had been looking for.

Great, relevant exercises meant not just to test your knowledge, but also your application skills.

• Matching exercises
• Grammar conjugation
• MCQ comprehension
• Open-ended comprehension
• Join-the-phrases to make a sentence
• Continuing the dialogue

Yes, they have everything. The type of exercises that you would actually do, both in class or as a self-learner.

I love how there are both vocabulary and grammar-focused exercises, to make sure you get ample practice. The grammar points taught in the textbook are given extra focus, where you will have a section developed to questions on those grammar points.

Complementary with the textbook

Used together with the textbook, the workbook serves as a consolidation for the stuff taught in the textbook. If you are those who love additional practice, it would be a good buy! I love how the workbook doesn’t cover just the vocabulary and grammar taught in the textbook but goes beyond it too. (:

As a standalone

I don’t really get the mentality that you must always buy the set. As a standalone, the workbook is a lot of good practice too. Particularly if you are already beyond the level / using other books etc and simply want some additional consolidation material. Even advanced learners can gain something out of using this workbook.

What I like:

• comprehensive exercises
• easy to work through
• answer keys (except for those long essay-like questions)
• reinforces what you learn in the textbook

To be improved:
