5 December, 2012 at 1:21 PMFor Korean, I’ve been trying to listen and watch a lot more Korean radio/TV shows. Then I’ve started to study Korean from my Korean textbook on my commute to and from work. And I’ve been able to have a lot of language exchanges with Koreans.
I don’t have any particular plans for the holidays though.
(BTW – I’m so envious of your skill. I started studying Korean about several months earlier than you and I’m still not able to hear Korean well. Anyway, I was just praising your skill and hard work – This can be disregarded)

17 December, 2012 at 3:05 PM(I feel kinda stupid replying to this so late but) Thanks for the encouragement. It has to be said over and over again, the fact that you’re studying Japanese and have done so well in Korean is really an inspiration for me to continue.
As for TV shows I really like Running Man and Vampire Prosecutor. Running Man is just plain funny and Vampire Prosecutor is a different kind of Korean drama show.

5 December, 2012 at 1:52 PMTo learn Korean, I have been working through the Yonsei and Sogang textbooks (still on the first books for each, Yonsei 1 and Sogang 1A), as well as listening to TTMIK lessons and using a grammar book called Korean Grammar In Use Beginner. I also started using the Yonsei Reading 1 book.
I also watch episodes of Running Man, Family Outing or other variety shows when ever I have time.

6 December, 2012 at 4:25 AMI really like it. It gives short descriptions of the grammar point. If it’s similar to another grammar point, it explains the difference(s) clearly. Each section also has sample sentences, exercises and dialogs. There’s 1.5 hours of audio for the Beginner book and 2.3 hours of audio for the Intermediate book, so I can get a lot of listening practice with the dialogs.
My favorite book so far is Yonsei (and the Reading book), but Korean Grammar In Use is a great resource to have as well.

5 December, 2012 at 2:01 PMI’ve been watching Korean dramas and sometimes when there are tv shows or interviews that have my idols in it, i’ll try watching without sub. although I can barely understand their conversation but my purpose is to test myself on picking up the words I’ve learnt in class.
I’m not sure if this is gonna work effectively but that’s what I could think of when I’m not in the environment (country) to learn it.. and… I don’t have any Korean friends. So I have no one to exchange conversations with them.

5 December, 2012 at 7:21 PMIt is just a grammar book with explanations, exercises and a key. You need a textbook to study and you can use the grammar to repeat it and get better explanations. The explanations are very good and clearly understandable. I have both, Korean Grammar in use Beginning and Intermediate and they are the best grammar books I have seen.

However, my Korean is not really improving coz I’m too lazy to study T_T. I spent my time watching K-drama instead of studying. But I found it quite interesting whenever new words I just learnt in 2-3 days suddenly appears on K-show I like the most 🙂 Always make me think, I am destined to learn Korean. kkkk

It always happen on my k-dramas and is happening now on my Japanese dramas too. 🙂 Maybe because we learned the word, so we can now recognize them. But still, it’s 신기하다, right? 🙂

As what Shanna said, it helps me focus more on the convo. Anyway, I know almost all the dialogues in Kim Sam Soon by heart after watching it a hundred times over the years! XD

Lately I’m trying to catch up with my Japanese so there’s not much Korean studying. Playlists have changed (from all Korean to all Japanese for the meantime) but my phone and Facebook are all in Korean. I still email/message/chat with Korean friends everyday. Read articles using FTLR(?). Review previous TOPIK intermediate papers. That’s it basically. 🙁

Have lots of improvement in the past few weeks. Following our textbook Genki 1&2. Using ANKI to help me remember vocabs (I have to! Even if I don’t want to). Listening to NHK’s lessons in Korean. Watching and rewatching Japanese dramas (and Korean dramas dubbed in Japanese) everyday.

THESIS!!!! And other papers to write!

Japanese.
Get comfortable until Chapter 15 of Genki (so that I’ll not be lost in the class anymore after the holidays). Finish my individual project (which involves Japanese dramas, subbing and dramanotes) for the class.
Korean.
Get back on track on my TOPIK preparation – kinda behind with my ‘scheduled’ lessons. Sadly it seems like there’s no Korean drama for me this holiday. 🙁

I have no topic yet and I have to present a proposal tomorrow. I first proposed on Sign language planning and policy but it was rejected (which was a blessing in disguise since I don’t really want to go around interviewing people!). Professors prefer theoretical – which I hate and which I don’t understand too. I think I’ll end up doing some comparative analysis between Korean and my native language (since I know no other languages – which is a big disadvantage as far as our class/department is concerned OTL). So maybe I’ll come up with some comparisons or problems when it comes to translations. The thing is, I still can’t find THE problem. Trying to find out if I can find some issues about Causatives or WH movement or Function words or Quantifiers. Ack! I really don’t know! /wrist I’d rather study Korean/Japanese!
Ah! And finally! I got a passing score in our quiz in our Japanese class! After getting zeros one after another finally got a decent score of 17/20. It was a fairly easy quiz, but still, it’s a score I’ll never ever have gotten last week. 🙂

5 December, 2012 at 3:36 PMI’ve been learning Korean through S.N.U textbooks, currently have book 2 – 5B. Only has a friend in Korea which I can only type in Korean with her. Other than that, I’m watching some K-dramas/shows to catch up with my listening practise. Though I can barely understands them.. Try reading (and guessing the words & meaning) from Korean articles, news & tweets help me to improve my understanding of Korean sentences & vocab as well.
No holiday plan for me, all I aim is to study Korean everyday but I have work. So can only study when I’m home with my spare time.

6 December, 2012 at 10:37 AMHaha, the SNU book seems well to me so far.. Though the dialogs are a little short for book 2 & book 3.. But Book 3 onwards are all in Korea.. And book 4 have longer dialogs, so it’s cool.. love the way they put the grammar points & vocabulary too (for me)! Although the CD you need to buy separately.. And no answers to the questions in the textbook. 🙁
And yeaa, many interesting drama coming soon! How i wish that we have 36 hours per day, so i can study korean more.. 😛

5 December, 2012 at 3:36 PM1. I have been using Anki and inputting sentences from my textbook “Integrated Korean:Beginning 1”. I have been reviewing every day so I don’t drop in level. I also write out the sentences and read about grammar (I don’t study grammar). I have read one chapter of a manhwa, but it’s far out of my grasp of understanding. Now I just read news articles when I have the time.
2. An intense study for 2 weeks! 😀 All my presents are Korean this year so that’s good. 20 hours a day of Korean listening. Going to work through the textbook I’m getting intensely (haven’t decided yet). Watching loads of K-Drama and K-Movies. I just can’t wait!

5 December, 2012 at 5:16 PMI use Minna no Nihongo for my japanese lessons. To help me remember my vocabulary, I use some note key rings I bought from Muji. For Grammar, I have a notebook where I revise grammar points covered in class by attempting to write my own sentences.
For the holidays, I would probably try to self study future chapters as I think progress in my Japanese class has been really slow since I switched classes. (My previous class was closed due to a number of students leaving.)

5 December, 2012 at 5:59 PMI’ve started learning Korean this August, in NUS. And it was good, we used 경희대 textbook. Not the best textbook I think, could be improved. Nevertheless the teachers in NUS were really good and they’ve encourage us to go further.
First time commenting on your blog, and being a fellow Singaporean I really am inspired by your blog to go on and study Korean further. So I decided to do a little self-study this vacation after my last paper this week. Got 4 weeks to study Korean and improve on it. I thought the basic level in NUS was extremely manageable and I could go on to study more on my own before the next semester starts. Reading your reviews on the Ewha textbooks, I’ve placed my trust in you and placed my order on GMarket for the Ewha 1-2 textbook. It should come just in time after my last paper this week. Heh hopefully I can cover quite a number of stuffs this vacation 🙂

Bought an Ehwa textbook (thanks to Shanna =] ) Waiting to scan the book when my brother bring it back from Singapore. Will start it when I am on holiday time. Now is in the assignment chaos period XD

5 December, 2012 at 9:25 PMI’m still learning Korean and would like to start Japanese soon too, have been delaying it forever, hopefully will join for Japanese classes here at my place, but again I’m would be resuming my French learning.
I joined for pegasus society’s online Korean course where they teach Korean for free. I’m sure you must be aware of Pegasus. I joined for intermediate but my level is not up to the intermediate and somewhere in between of Beginner’s and Intermediate.
I’m also thinking to start watching a Korean drama, it has been like few months since I watched one. I started “Pasta” last night but I’m looking for a better video quality source than I have. (viki.com strangely isn’t working in my country-India)
I have to also resume listening to TTMIK pod-casts and Iyagi! ㅠㅠ

Was doing quite a bit for Korean by reading the 전우치 novel and reading up on modern Korean history. Then stopped for awhile and these few days I haven’t been doing much! Decided to switch to Japanese and I find myself not really knowing how to study Japanese and what to do. So I am just listening to some podcasts / radio shows and also reading some kpop articles on BIG BANG in Japanese! Maybe I’ll go watch Seungri host in Japanese. I love watching Korean stars who can speak Japanese 😀
YES PLANS 😀 Plan to study hard for TOPIK 6. Brushing up the advanced grammar. Hopefully I can finish 전우치 2 and have a better understanding of modern Korean history! Find that soooo fascinating. And I think I’m going to read up more about the newspaper/tv industry in Korea. There’s quite a fascinating history there I think! (:

I watch Korean dramas whenever I have time to help my listening comprehension, and just because I like them. Lately I’ve been trying to improve my reading skills by reading Korean drama comics becuase Shanna said she found them really helpful. (Thanks Shanna!) So far I’ve read “My Princess” and “You’re Beautiful”.

I try to study Korean 1-2 hours a day after work (I try at least). Irealized that it’s best for me to work even a little every day tha for a long period of time once or twice a week.
I’m working on Elementary Korean from Tuttle Press (I do ALL the exercices, from the work book too..), and I countercheck with Ewha Books too (I just bought the first book of this series and plan to buy the rest).
I use Grammar in use (the first) too, love it and I plan to buy the next. (So many books to buy!!!!)
And I watch TONS of dramas and listens to Korean songs (a LOT, my friends think I’m a freak! LOL)

Unless they are simple exercises like cloze passage or matching words. ><;; I ignore those "complete the sentence" where they just throw you the front / back clause. If it wasn’t for TTMIK I would have given up wanting to learn Korean all together. ^^ So yeah, right now I plan to study a whole lot with TTMIK. Watch K-Drama and variety shows and also listen to K-Pop song. Since I working, I tried to at least memorize 20 words of vocabs and follow TTMIK lessons.but nowadays I really lazy to read it because I’m really tired and sleep after arrive in home.(I only reading book for TOPIK preparation). Now, listen to song try to catch the vocabs. Other than that, currently I’m opening my blog in korean(naver), me too day,kakao talk and also I follow alot of K-stars and try to figured it out about their tweet.(and it takes long time to translate their tweet into english..sighh)

I only have weekends, so It kinda hard for me to study, since sometimes I hanging out with my friend, visiting my families members and I also tried to finish all my k-drama and variety shows..:)

Any websites out there have got simple texts that I can read and understand? Can’t be too difficult cos my grasp of vocab and grammar is still at most basic-intermediate. Or anything to recommend?

When I was… uhm… trying to cure my 상사병 (!) i searched for 짝사랑 and I ended up reading blog entries after blog entries. Some are difficult but some writes fairly easy (or easy enough for my understanding – I’m also on the beginner~intermediate transition). Before I knew it I think my reading comprehension has improved a lot after reading those blogs. 🙂

6 December, 2012 at 8:44 PMI never liked Korean dramas, but I read Shanna’s recommendation of Queen of Housewives and to my utter shock I loved it! I watched the whole thing on YouTube with subs and now I’m going through it more slowly without subs, rewinding a lot. I’m learning so much everyday, conversational Korean.
Any other dramas similar to that one? I liked it because the characters are older, it is funny, no cuteness, no fatal diseases, no first love. I’m afraid I’ll never find another drama I like as much as that one.

I also started Chinese recently for some odd reason… Probably another way to procrastinate on schoolwork.
Also I finally gave Big Bang a listen after seeing many posts about them and I wish I had listened sooner. I dont even like most pop music(regardless of language)

Hmm… well for Korean lately, I’ve just been listening to K-pop/K-Indie and watching Korean dramas.. I’m been trying to listen more to TTMIK but with so much homework and projects lately, it’s been almost impossible for me T_T
But hopefully during winter break I’ll be able to do at least 3 lessons on TTMIK. And hopefully my Ehwa workbook will arrive by the end of December (thanks to Shanna ^^)
As for Japanese, I’ve given up for now OTL haha I haven’t worked on it for like 7 months now maybe.. Memorizing hiragana isn’t hard, but it just requires so much more work than Korean. At least when you know Hangul, you can read it and from there on it’s just about understanding it. But with Japanese, if you don’t know one character, you’re kinda screwed. T_T Plus I just find Korean so much nicer, I love the Japanese language but Korean appeals to me the most =P

Well as I already stated above, I’m planning on doing for lessons with TTMIK and hopefully my Ehwa workbook will arrive and I’ll be able to work on that ^^

I started learning Jap for a few months only in 2009 cos I’ve liked manga since young. But in 2010 I stopped learning Jap cos was busy with some stuff then. Yet, in Aug 2010 when I was about to pick up Jap again, I “accidentally/thankfully” watched a Korean drama and fell in love with one of the actors – who’s actually an idol. Since then, my love for kpop and Korean just escalated at an unprecedented rate, and at a higher intensity than my Jap liking. The rest’s history hahaha.. 😛
So I studied Jap from Minna No Nihongo. When I moved on to Korean, I had my first interaction with Hangeul and took my first Korean lessons in 1st sem of university.. Used my prof’s own published Textbook. By level 3, my prof never come out with new textbooks, so we used Yonsei 2급 교과서.

Yea, planning to self study (after being inspired by you when I chanced upon your blog during last sem’s exam period). Both Korean and Jap. I am wondering for Jap if Minna no Nihongo or Shin Bunka’s a better textbook.. 😛 아자 아자 화이팅! 頑張って！！ keke 🙂

I’ve been trying to google some cheat sheets for studying Japanese grammar through Korean but I ended up reading blogs of people learning both languages and it’s interesting to see different opinions when they compare the two languages. I think the learning curve is steeper in beginner Japanese than beginner Korean. The Kana and the Kanji made me give up studying Japanese last year. I have no choice but to study Japanese in school again, but now I learned how to be more open-minded about it. It does take a lot more effort, but it’s not too bad after all… However there are still times when I just want to throw a tantrum (and throw my Japanese textbook while at it) and go running to King Sejong!

And yeah, its great that King Sejong came up with Hangeul, it makes writing a bit easier than Japanese hehe 🙂 But cos of it, there’s more overlaps in meanings for Korean words, if you know what I mean? 😛

Can survive conversation with loads of errors and can understand about 50% of easy (blog/diary style) articles and dramas but don’t think can even pass Level 3 TOPIK yet. Started studying Korean 5 years ago. Started self-studying for 3 years, attended Korean classes for a year and now back to self-studying. I studied – no scratch that! I ATTENDED beginner Japanese class for a semester last year. Did not learn a thing and ended up gaving it up. Found myself in an intermediate Japanese class 4 weeks ago. And because I was ‘the lost girl’ in class, I had to self study from square one – and that’s when it started being fun (though I’m still lost in class!). 🙂
And yeah, I’ve read one of the arguments of a Japanese learner – that since there’s practically ‘no Hanja’ some similar sounding words can be confused with one another while in Japanese, there will always be a Kanji to distinguish them. 🙂

Mmm I’m not sure about Japanese textbooks. Personally I’m not a fan of minna no nihongo. Haven’t heard of the other one so I can’t comment ><;
