Hahaha sometimes I feel like I can pretend that I’ve moved to Korea. ? I spend my working hours in a generally Korean-speaking office and most of after or before work hours are spent reading or listening to Korean. On weekends, I sometimes watch Korean dramas on VIU too. I think I don’t have to spend extra time studying Korean since technically I spent 40 hours of my doing that ?.
I’m enjoying my work and the fact that everything is in Korean just triples the fun factor for me. Hahahaha a friend was like “wait till the fun wears off” lol.
I’m using business Korean everyday and to be honest this is something quite new to me too. And somehow I’m actually surviving without having learnt it (not consciously anyway).
Having not attended proper Korean lessons (language institutes etc) or studied in Korea (undergrad/masters), I’m actually at a disadvantage. I never actually wrote a report or any business type of writing in class. I know I would be much better than how I am now if I had the opportunity but I don’t want the lack of such experiences bother me. I strive to be as good or even better on my own ?.
I’m teaching myself how to write reports and other stuff by reading more and taking note of the way stuff is being explained and phrased.
It’s not easy to learn the linguistic aspects in addition to doing the actual work but I’m learning to balance it.
Today one of the things I learnt is:
Setting up a meeting – 미팅 주선
I used to write 미팅 요청 (in my mind I was probably thinking of requesting for meeting lol) but now I know better.
I love the fact that there’s so much to learn. Work + language + cultural aspects.
- Learn to read faster in Korean
- Learn to scan-read Korean docs
- Learn to write reports
- Read more in Korean
- Build base knowledge
Ok so these are some of my goals that I need to work towards.
Since I have to deal with so much Korean during work, I need to build up the skills to scan for the necessary info in the shortest time frame and learn how to spot keywords. That’s something that I haven’t really been able to do. Maybe cos I’m always obsessed about reading everything in chronological order and in full and refuse to just scan a passage. So now I can only read and not pick out stuff immediately -.-
Life is funny. Those who know me in real life may know that I used to be really in love with Economics, business, investment and the like. I used to think that I’ll definitely work in this area until Korean just come out of nowhere into my life. Then I became a humanities student who loves the arts and just when I thought I’ll pursue something more towards that area, I came back to my initial area of interest!
While I still retain quite a bit of my old knowledge, that was when I was still a teen and what I knew was limited too. So that’s an area I need to study! ?
Super exciting. I love studying lolol. Sorry I’m a nerdy geek or geeky nerd at heart. Books are my favourite ?.
Knowledge is empowering but hahaha I tend to be very selective in the knowledge I pursue ?. I need to become more well-read lol.
Next month would be my 8th year of blogging ?. This blog has definitely recorded a big part of my life and while there are loads of ups and downs, I’m so glad that Korean came to my life. ?
