I wonder why I have not started watching 예능프그램 earlier. Somehow I was more of a drama/movie person. But upon reflection, I realised that the best way to learn how Koreans speak is to watch talkshows. The dialogue are less(?) scripted and they speak in their normal ways and speed. On the few occasions that I watch snippets of talkshows, I find myself not being able to catch up with their speed and the amount of slangs used made it difficult for me to follow the show.
I’ve been spending more time with variety shows now that my listening ability has improved. Recently, I’ve started studying Korean while watching 놀러와. I quite like the fact that it’s a talkshow (I’m still not into game shows) and the content is really interesting. Since I’m watching it online, I can pause as many times as I want. The best part of talkshows is that they have alot of captions on the screen and frequently, I’ll pause the show to look up a new word/slang. It’s helping me alot and it’s easier to remember a new word since I learnt it with a context.
Context + visual + audio = best way of remembering things ^^

23 January, 2011 at 11:16 AMHmm… Interesting. I’m totally opposite of you. I started watching variety shows first (as in learning as I watch), and now I find variety shows easier to understand as compared to dramas. -_- So perhaps it’s a matter of which one you start with first?

I’m not much of a drama person so I like watching these more but I found myself stuck to the same exact language system they’re using which is slang and sometimes you depend on the captions (me captions freak). But this is REALLY REALLY a good way to learn the language because it’s more natural and everything’s there in front of you like listening, reading, slang, sometimes 사투리 and vocabs~ You can also learn their culture and such^^ I really can relate to this ahaha.

Do you know if Kyunghee books and Yonsei books have exercises and the answers in their book?

yes they have exercises in their textbooks but it’s very minimal (answers provided). They have a separate workbook which I didnt purchase
Yonsei:
The textbook has exercises with NO answers. The reading book has exercises WITH answers. The exercises are better than those in the kyunghee textbooks. Yonsei have a separate workbook too. But our teacher didnt need it that time so I dint purchase ^^ Heard that there are answers though

29 January, 2011 at 1:53 AMI’ve got one older episode of 놀러와 which I’ve watched numerous times (and thoroughly enjoy watching), but I haven’t really watched any beyond that one episode (I only grabbed that one because of the guests they had). I guess I need to check out some of the newer episodes.

5 February, 2011 at 12:37 PMI guess you’re right. I’ve been stuck in dramas for a long time. Maybe I should start watching Variety shows regularly too. I particularly like Come to Play too since I can’t tolerate game shows. ^^
