Korean Movies

I only started liking Korean movies recently and hence I haven’t watched too many. Let me know any good ones I’ve missed! ^^ I’m not good with reviews and stuff, but rest assured that everything on this list is good unless mentioned otherwise 😀

Twenty 스물 (2015) Kim Woo Bin!!! Many laugh out moments, but is still poignant. Coming-of-age films are my cup of tea.

Gangster High 폭력써클 (2006) Boys, high school, brotherhood, loyalty, gangsters, fights, girls. Well, nothing very new but I always like a good brotherhood show. However, it didn’t deliver, making all that fighting scenes seemingly meaningless. Jung Kyung Ho is good as always though. Heh, I see that brooding 박사아들 in him 😀 Didn’t know he already had it in him since 2006 lol.

I like it hot 뜨거운것이 좋아 (2008) Pleasant watch.

All About My Wife 내 안내의 모든 것 (2012) Worth the 2 hours spent!

100 Days with Mr Arrogant (2002) eh. Kim Jae Won makes anything watchable.

My PS Partner (2012) ❤❤❤ Features some of my favorite acting talents. Kim Ah Joong has an awesome voice (and perhaps one of the reasons she was casted heh)… yeah speaking voice too ahem. I need to rewatch this!

Changing Partners 지금 사랑하는 사람과 살고 있습니까? (2007) hehe I forgot how hot 이동건 can be. For a movie that is anything but strait-laced, it’s not daring enough. That being said, it’s a good watch.

The Neighbor 이웃사람 ( 2012) MUST WATCH. Griping story, with attention paid to the smallest detail. This is a good example of why I love Korean films so much

Love 911 반창꼬 (2012) Was really looking forward to this when I saw the trailer, but mm. Just decent.

Gwanghae 광해, 왕이 된 남자 (2012) as good it was hyped up to be. Beautiful movie, one that leaves you thinking

Petty Romance 째째한 로맨스 (2010) heehee loads of laugh out moments. 😛

Werewolf Boy 늑대소년 (2012) I really like this. Even though I think the hype has escalated my expectations so much that it fell a little flat for me towards the end.

My girlfriend is an agent (2009) Over simplistic, but serves the narrative purpose.  The setup is funny and the leads have chemistry. A great movie to watch, but just for one time.

The Thieves 도독들 (2012) It’s a fun ride, with a few memorable scenes here and there. The cast is solid but loopholes in the story exist.

Howling (2012) Very different from what you would expect from the trailer. In a good way.

Voice of a murderer (2007) my heart is still racing. ><

You’re my pet (2011) SO CUTE. Wasn’t sure what to expect, given the ridiculous premise but awww I’m sold.

Neverending Story (2012) What started out as a sad story should remain sad. Was a good watch though. I’ll never look at Uhm Tae Woong the same way again.

Chilling Romance 오싹한 연애 (2011) Love the blend of the scary and the funny. Seriously, they manage to turn the scariest parts into the most whacky scenes.

Hindsight 푸른소금 (2011) For all the suspense built up along the way, the movie turns out to be rather flat and disappointing. I liked the love story in there, but the bigger story on the gangs was just unrealistic and unaccounted for. It’s an alright movie. but once is enough.

My Way (2011) For all the hype that it has generated, My Way failed to deliver. There are many many better war / brotherhood movies around. Would have been better, more believable and touching if it wasn’t on such an epic scale. One of the very rare times I wish I can walk out of the theater straightaway.

The Crucible 도가니 (2011) Awesome and mind-blowing. Watch it.

완득이 (2011) Pretty good. Not mind-blowing fantastic, but still worth a watch.

티끌모아로맨스 (2011) A sweet romance comedy with some substance. Besides, Han Ye Seul is awesome in there.

Countdown (2011) What started out as a thriller ends up to be something different. Worth watching.

The Apprehenders 체포왕 (2011) So many of my fav ajusshi scene stealers in one movie! ^^ And Lee Seon Gyun and Park Joong HOon as the male leads? I’m SOLD. Not your average crime detective movie. The focus is more on the competition between the two neighbouring police task forces rather than the crime itself. And it’s played more for comical relief rather than thriller. But it’s a good balance between the two and that’s what got me loving the movie!

Hunters/Psychic (2010) 초능력자 – felt that something was lacking, but overall worth to watch. Read more about it HERE

I Saw the Devil 악마를 보았다

Joint Security Area

Secret Reunion 의형제 – I’ll actually prefer a sad ending. The story is captivating, but somehow it’s resolved too easily at the back. A little too ‘feel-good’ for its theme

Maunday Thursday 우리들의 행복한 시간 – MUST WATCH!

Joseon Detective X

My mini black dress

Midnight FM – a thriller that lives up to its name

Hello Schoolgirl

Hello Ghost

Ajusshi / The Man from Nowhere

Housemaid (2010)

Cyrano Dating Agency

I’m a Cyborg, but it’s ok 싸이보그지만 괜찮아

Lady Daddy 아빠가 여자를 좋아해

My Gangster Boyfriend 내 깡패 같은 애인

71: Into the Gunfire

Into the White Night 백야행 – enjoyed it tremendously.

The Taoist wizard 전우치 – Was good, but felt that it could be better. Lacked the punch to make it a true classic. I said that, but to date it’s one of my most rewatched movies.

Il Mare 시월애

Rough Cut 영화는 영화다 (2008) – So Ji Sub and Kang Ji Hwan = eye candy. Real action.

The Classic – The plot is simple enough and i didn’t know it would be THAT good. Was crying like an idiot when I watched it on the plane.

Moss 이끼 (2010) – Awesome plot, keep you guessing and thinking all the way to the end. It’s one of those movies that will remain in your thoughts for at least a few days.

Welcome to Dongmakgol – war time story from a different angle. They managed to pull off the fantasy angle and yet make it such a touching movie. This is one AWESOME movie. I cried.

Speedy Scandal – a feel good family oriented story. Managed to be funny and touching at the same time

Thirst – Not your typical western vampire story. Humane and supernatural at the same time.

Oldboy – Mad crazy movie. But at the same time so awesome.

A frozen Flower – Explicit scenes aside, I love the story

The Housemaid (1960) – I watched it in 2009 and think it has a mind blowing plot. Imagine watching this in 1960.

Miss Gold Digger – Han Ye Seul is the female lead. Of course I love it. Rom-com on how she has 4 boyfriends at one go in order to choose the best among them. You can imagine the trouble that entails ^^

Unstoppable Marriage 못말리는 결혼

My Father

Bungee Jumping Of Their Own – A beautiful story. It really shows how love transcends all barriers

King and the Clown – Has probably the most memorable ending I’ve seen

200 Pounds Beauty – a classic. What else can be said? ^^

( Can I use Korean this page?
Or Can you understand my sentence? because my English is very poor.. I don’t know how to write my opinion into English! )
    2. 이 모든 드라마들은 DVD로 보시는 건가요?
(Did you watch all of them in DVD??)

Those dramas you have recommended such as Fantasy Couple, Really Really like you, Dal Ja’s Spring and Wonderful Life were not too bad.

Dal Ja’s Spring was taken from a Korean comics..Chae Rim potrayed as Dal Ja.. she was funny in that drama together with Lee MinKi.

Star child Jung Da Bin had grown up already when she acted in “Really Really Like You”. She was adorable in “Wonderful Life”. Oh, her big round eyes… I couldn’t helped it shed a tear or two when she acted as a sick child. Kim Jae Won as her reel life father. There was a scene where he kneeled down before the doctor to cure his daughter.sob!sob!

There is another drama Eugene had also acted. “아빠셋 엄마하나” Watch it if you are free, sixteen episodes altogether then we can exchange information on this.

U should watch Sungkyunkwan scandal. It’s really worth to spend your time on SKKS… Trust me!!! hehe ^^. I watch that drama because of Soong Joongki but I end up fallen for “Moon Jae Shin” character by Yoo Ah In. I never see this actor before, but his acting is really good!!! And his character remind me of “Iljimae” character by Lee Jun Ki and Jung Il Woo. Ermmm, maybe I ‘m too addicted to ancient+action Korean drama haha :P. If U like ancient drama, u should watch Iljimae (2008) & The Return of Iljimae (2009) ^^

I have probably watched more dramas this month than in the past 15 years.
Dramas I have watched recently (and finished!)

    Baker King Kim Tak Gu
    Worlds WIthin
    Queen of Housewives
    Dong Yi
    Conspiracy of the Court
    Soulmate

These are a few dramas which I really liked.

    Worlds Within
    Conspiracy of the Court
    Soulmate

These 3 got really low (or bad ratings) but they’re a refreshing change from the typical k-romance/melodrama/comedy shows. I’ve also been on a Sageuk binge and I would highly recommend Conspiracy of the Court (Alternative title is Sad Seoul’s Song I think)

Currently, I’m watching Secret Garden and Queen of Reservals.
Am not impressed with Mary Stays out All Night but I may try to pick it up later. Anyone watching this can give their impression?

heard alot of good things about soulmate! will prob try out that 😀 Mary stayed out at night is a fun watch. there’s not much of plot movement at the moment, but Jang Geun Seuk and Moon Geun Young are so cute you can just watch the drama with them!

I’m super liking Secret Garden at the moment. and I’m watching Fugitive too. Tried Queen of Reversals but the first 20 min dint really impress me. is it good? I loved queen of housewives though.

Hmm Queen of Reversals is O-kay…it gets better…Can’t beat Queen of Housewives though.

In Mary Stays Out All Night, I think Moon Geun Young’s character annoyed me somewhat in the first episode so I didn’t really feel like continuing on. But then again, I am kinda indifferent towards her kkk

Secret Garden ..loving it so far, BUT, I do hope they do not pull the terminal illness/cancer shtick…they should keep far far away from that cliche!

Since finishing Dong Yi, I feel like there’s this void. Thinking of picking up Yi San but lord! I don’t know if I can hold out for another LONG drama. The only drama I am interested in right now is Secret Garden ^^ Everything else is just filler.

Tried watching Gumiho but so far still rather bleh for me.

By the way, check out the movie/documentary/reality (hard to pin it down to a genre) – Actresses.
    Trailer : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDAajKfhQVc

The actresses all play themselves and has a behind-the-scenes feel.

It’s at the very least an interesting watch. 🙂

Listen to me and watch Bad Guy. It’s really different form other dramas. The Music and the Actors are amazing. The genre is more like dramatic romantic and a little funny and cute (not tooo cute).

Just watch it, every single episode was amazing. You will definitely not regret it..

    Hi there,
I’m surprised you didn’t recommend Dae Jang Geum, Dong Yi or The Great Queen Seondeok . They are all long historical dramas. Dae Jang Geum is a masterpiece and it’s probably the best thing I’ve seen on a screen in a very very long time. Lee Young-ae was flawless.

Dae Jang Geum actually got me started with kdramas and I’ve seen about 20 now

I thinking of watching Jumong later this summer.
I just came across your blog… excellent work there. I love all the learning resources as I’m learning korean now

Hello! ^^ For some strange reason, I have never watched a historical drama, only movies. >,< My friends have been raving about Dong Yi, I think I may start on that one if I have time.

Seems like u are a big fan of historical dramas (: Thanks for leaving a comment!

If you had to see only one historical drama, then you should see Dae Jang Geum, it’s a long drama (54 hours), but absolutely worth it. Dae Jang Geum is a masterpiece. I saw it 9 months ago but from time to time i get the urge to rewatch it. Like I said in the earlier post, it is much better than most films / videos produced in the west

Dong Yi and Great Queen Seondeok are also very remarkable and I would classify
them as top tier in terms of story line, memorable characters, overall story, scenery and costumes. Both of them are more than 60 hours long.

Since you haven’t seen any historical dramas yet, you might want to start with Damo, Il ji Mae, Return of Il ji Mae, Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Ja Myung Go. These are all relatively short but very good historical dramas.

You may like a more modern spin on the historical genre by watching Princess hours/Goong and Prince Hours / Goong S. These both are very good and I would recommend them as well.

One thing I figured out after the fact was that watching the historical dramas helped me build up some vocabulary. This is because the set of the words used is pretty limited and most of these words get repeated from episode to episode and across the other historical kdramas. Hey, there are only so many ways the cabinet ministers can petition the king or the King’s mother trying to find a consort to produce a heir to the throne.

The only draw back about historical dramas is that the themes are often repeated or too similar. Cabinet ministers trying to oust the king, consorts aligning themselves with powerful factions, people on the king’s side bent on getting a heir to the throne, constant power struggles, back stabbings, etc.

In Dae Jang Geum, Dong Yi and Great Queen Seondeok, the directors do a great job in creating a diversity of plots, characters and themes.

        Original Sound tracks
The opening and closing sound tracks in Dae Jang Geum, Dong Yi and Great Queen Seondeok can get quite addicting. They also had really good tracks used through the episodes. I find myself listening to these from time to time.

        Character Switching
You probably know this. As you watch more dramas, you start seeing familiar faces from other dramas. For example Han Hyo Joo was the lady protagonist in Dong Yi and Il Ji Mae, Dae Jang Geum’s medical school buddy Shin-Bi was the main lady character in Yi San. Lady Choi from Dae Jang Geum played major princess/consort roles in Yi San and Jumong, Some of the kitchen ladies-in-waiting from Dae Jang Geum were consort Suk-Bin’s ladies-in-waiting in Dong Yi, and towards the end of Dong Yi, they made some references to being kitchen ladies in a former life (Referring to their roles in Dae Jang Geum).

Of course keeping with kdrama norm, some of the plots and stories carry with them tidal waves of emotion and you sometimes have to shed a tear from time to time. (This rarely happens with western movies / serials)

I thought it was quite interesting that old Korea was quite conservative. In some of the historical dramas the most you would see with respect to male/female emotions was holding hands or an embrace, but I think this was very powerful at least in the way it was executed than the some of the scenes in western movies.

        Advice
When starting a long historical drama, the first few episodes can feel like a drag, but once you get past episode 5 or 10, the story takes a life of it own. When I watch the longer dramas, I do about 5 to 10 episodes in one sitting, because they’re that good.

        Interesting things
There were a lot of instances where girls disguised themselves as boys for part of the drama. I’ve seen this in a lot of historical dramas, which leads me to think it has some sort of historical story/significance. I guess women’s rights back then is not what it is today.

In almost all the historical dramas and regular/modern dramas I’ve seen there is always a love triangle involving the main lady characters. Maybe this is one element Korean dramas can’t do without.

        Must Watch
        Dae Jang Geum

        Top Tier – Should Watch
        Dong Yi
        Great Queen Seondeok
        Princess Hours
Ja Myung Go (the last few episodes felt a bit rushed)

OK – Watch If you have time
        Damo
        Il Ji Mae
        Chuno
        Prince Hours
        Yi San

        Don’t watch
        Shin Don

I’m still yet to watch Jumong but I heard it’s really good. I could go on. As you can tell, I’m really excited about this, but I’ll stop here for now

Hopefully this will be helpful to your other readers

Hello~! It’s Lina (from FB, Twitter etc). I check out your blog posts occasionally but usually lurk silently but when I came across this section of your blog I was intrigued to see that you watched the 1960 version of The Housemaid! Never thought I’d find someone I knew who’s actually watched that before… it left a really deep impression on me with the director’s Hitchcock-style storytelling.

Also I was recently recommended a movie by a friend called 3-iron (or 빈집, the original Korean title – the lead actor is the guy from Delightful Girl Choon Hyang btw, but he doesn’t speak a single word in the movie) when we were talking about good Asian movies, and I really enjoyed it. It’s powerful with such little dialogue, and stays with you long after it’s over… Highly recommended! ^^

      Hi Lina!

1960 Housemaid is simply mind-blowing! The 2010 version pales in comparison D: It trumps many movies without being big budget or using special effects etc. The stairs left a very deep impression lol

I’ve vaguely heard of that movie but it went under my radar and I forgot about it soon after. Will definitely check it out again! 😀 The premise is intriguing. Thanks for the tip!

        No prob 😀

If you have time and want to watch a young Kim Ha Neul, Ha Ji Won and pre-Oldboy Yoo Ji-tae in the early stages of their careers, you could also check out Ditto (동감). Similar to Il Mare with the cross-time communication, even released in the same year but several months earlier (and did better at the Korean box office though Il Mare is definitely more well-known now after The Lake House remade it). I liked the simplicity of the story, how they brought in an important chapter in S.Korea’s history into the plot, and the main theme 슬픈 향기 is beautiful 🙂

Oh! I’ve never heard of this one! ^^ Most people are still more familiar with the k-drama scene rather than Korean films. I’m glad to find someone interested in Korean films too!! I’m still relatively new to it though!

I chanced upon it some time back, and when I saw the cast I knew I had to watch it (also, random but the best friend of KHN’s character really reminded me of Eunjung from T-ara). It’s actually available on Youtube, there are two versions online but one is horribly dubbed over, the other is in original Korean (seatch D.itto [1/13]).

I’m actually the opposite, I’ve watched a lot of Korean movies and I have very low tolerance for K-dramas with all the makjang and predictability – except I thoroughly enjoyed Secret Garden, my love for Ha Ji Won compelled me to watch it – movies in general have no time to waste on dragging plotlines, and the Korean film industry is wonderfully diverse. I’m sure you’ll enjoy them the more you watch and also with your knowledge of the language 😀

I haven’t seen Secret Garden in the dramas that you watched. It is my favorite drama , Hyun Bin and Ha Jı Won are playing in the drama. As my advice, you should watch Secret Garden. You’re My Pet is also a great movie, you should watch it, too 🙂

Have you all ever heard of Becoming a Billionaire?
I’m a noob to Korean drama/movies but my interest build up ever since I watched You’re Beautiful. I cannot stop myself from watching each YAB episodes and even though my eyes is very tired of watching, I have a great will to watch till the end.

Becoming a Billionaire (English title) / The Birth of the Rich (literal title) has been aired in my place and due to YAB I’ve gained my interest in this drama. It’s quite a simple and a bit boring story but Oh Tae-Bong (played by Ji Hyun-Wu) playing with deep feelings really breaks my heart away following his emotions till the end.

    ~sorry i am not good at words~

Wow, and I thought I watched a lot of Korean dramas and films. I’m impressed. 🙂 I just stumbled across your website and I really like it. I’m also teaching myself Korean and it’s always nice to find a fellow scholar. I too use Talk To Me In Korean as a major resource! 🙂 Based on the numerous dramas and films that you have seen, do you find that it has helped you increase your Korean vocabulary? I think it has helped me tremendously but I know others have said that it makes it harder for them to put their own thoughts together into Korean so they stay away from watching a lot of Korean dramas/films. I was just curious to know your thoughts on that.

Also . . . I recommend The King 2 Hearts for one of the best 2012 dramas so far. I’m a big fan of Ha Ji-won since watching Secret Garden. Also, she’s in a film called Love, So Divine that was really good. There’s also a drama with Hyun Bin (my favourite actor) called Friend, Our Legend (2009) which was good, and especially interesting since it was based in Pusan and everyone spoke in the Pusan dialect.

GYUAH. You cannot NOT watch ‘The Nice Guy’ or 세상 어디에도 없는 착한 남자.

I was so engrossed with that show I tried to do transcripting of some parts of it and do korean learning along the way, but mostly I was ‘YES JOONGKI. MANIPULATE MY FEWLINGS! GO AHEAD!’

I cannot elaborate enough on the fact that ‘Beautiful-Joongki’ is an official noun. That’s his new name. There’s no other way to say his name. His signature should also reflect that: ‘Song Beautiful-Joongki’. 사랑에 빠졌다~ *heart shaped eyes* Lolol

but I must say I did learn some useful terms from watching the show and diligently copying down words to check on Naver/Daum. So it’s not *all* obsessive fangirlage. 😀
