[Korean Lyrics + Translations] Hyung Don & GD – 해볼라고 (Trying to Do)

Dying of laughter.

I haven’t seen a more wacky performance and it’s extra funny that it’s Hyung Don and G Dragon. I don’t usually do kpop lyrics translation, but this is a gold mine of Korean cultural references, word play – good way to study Korean! I’ve said before that understanding language jokes/word play means that you have a high level of grasp of a language. It’s something that you just can’t learn via textbooks.

Firstly, the duo’s name – 형용돈죵

형돈 obviously comes from Jung Hyung Don. 용 refers to GD (지용) and 죵 can be seen as pronouncing (지용) so fast that it becomes mashed into ‘jyong’. Put together, you can see the team name as a mash-up of the two members’ names. BUT. There’s also a double meaning of 형, 용돈 줘 (Hyung, please give me some allowance)

형 –  how guys call close guy friends / seniors (must be older than them). A common Korean addressee term. It’s not simply used for older men, but it implies a close, familiar relationship and not a big age gap. You hardly see a 20 year old calling a 40 year old ‘hyung’ unless they are super close and the older one has given permission for him to do so.

용돈 – pocket money, allowance

죵 – a very cute, aegyo way of saying 줘, meaning give. It’s like 줘 -> 줭 -> 죵. Koreans like to add ㅇ below characters to give it a cute vibe. Like 주세요 -> 주세용

Onwards to the lyrics! And study some Korean via kpop!

매일 말만 해볼라고 하지만 난 할 수 없었다고
Everyday I’m saying that I’m trying to do, but I couldn’t do it

용기를 내 고마 해볼라고 오늘 밤에 일 내볼라고
I’m going to muster up courage and tonight I’m going to do something

(Wait a minute)

형도니가 랩을 한다 호옹 호옹 호옹
Hyung Don is rapping. Ho-ong Ho-ong
지용이가 랩을 한다 호옹 호옹 호옹
Jiyong is rapping. Ho-ong Ho-ong
우리같이 랩을 한다 호옹 호옹 호옹
We are rapping together. Ho-ong Ho-ong
보고 있나? 듣고 있나?
Are you looking? Are you listening?

Should be 형돈이가 랩을 한다 but the lyrics was written as 형도니가 랩을 한다 (not sure deliberate or what)

2G 쓰던 그 녀석 LTE로 갈아타면 그건 해볼라고 해 해 해볼라고
When the boy who was using 2G changes to LTE, it means he’s trying try try trying
너랑 하트 주고 라스트팡 뭐 좀 해볼라고 해 해 해볼라고
Giving hearts to you for the last pang, trying to do something try try trying

The hearts / last pang is a reference to Anipang, the popular Korean game via Kakao. Which I don’t play. So I can’t tell you what exactly is a last pang -.-

술 못 마시던 그 녀석 흑기사에 목숨 걸면 그건 해볼라고 해볼라고 어떻게든 해볼라고
When the boy who normally can’t drink puts his life on the line becoming a black knight for you, it means that he’s trying to do something, trying however he can
꿍스꿍스꿍스 쿵쿵따리쿵쿵따나 해볼라고 해볼라고 해볼라고 해
Kkungseu-Kkungseu-Kkungseu Kkung-kkung-tta Kkung-kkung-tta Trying to do something try trying

혹기사 – black knight. Basically a reference to offering to drink for you

목슴 걸다 – putting one’s life on the line. Trying his/her darnest best

쿵쿵따 – my favorite Korean word game, played often in 2D1N (the variety show). Starts with a 3 character word and the next person has to say another 3 character word that starts with the end character of the previous word. 화장실 – 실내화 – 화장대 – 대머리 – 리무진 – 진달래  I LOVE THE GAME. Can be made more complicated by making players repeat everything from the top before adding on -.-

고름베개 그 녀석 라텍스로 바꿔 베면 그건 해볼라고 해 해 해볼라고 한번 해볼라고
When the boy who used to use a U-shaped pillow changes to a latex, it means he’s trying, try try trying
멀쩡하던 그 녀석 갑자기 ‘매의 눈’ 하면 you know 해볼라고
When the boy who behaves normally starts to give you ‘the eye’ you know he’s trying
‘달’ 볼라고? 해볼라고 해
Look at the ‘moon’? Look at the sun. Sun **

Google 고름베개  to see how it looks like. I can only assume that a latex pillow is considered more classy???

매의 눈 (linked) means ‘eyeing you top to bottom’.

** The last part is a word play. as 해볼라고 can means “trying to do” as well as 해 보라고 (i ask you to look at the sun).

Fashion의 완성은 얼굴 호옹 호옹 호옹 음악의 완성은 누구? 형용돈줭
The point to fashion is the face. Ho-ong Ho-ong Ho-ong The point to music is? Hyung Young Dong Chyong (their team name)
One plus one 용 plus 돈 하나하면 ‘힙’ 둘하면 ‘합’ 힙합
One plus one yong plus don. One is ‘hip’, two is ‘hop’ hip hop
토요일엔 무한도전 보며 호호호 다 같이 따라 불러 해볼라고
Watch Infinity challenge on Saturday hohoho let’s all follow and sing trying to do
One plus one 용 plus 돈 너와 내가 하나되어 say HIP-HOP
One plus one yong plus don. you and me be one say HIP-HOP
(Wait a minute)

Fashion의 완성은 얼굴 – a little hard to translate. Literally means “the finishing point of fashion is the face”, which means it’s the most important. If you remember, it’s a reference to GD&Hyung Don’s dialogue in Infinity Challenge, the episode where GD interned in their “company”. And that is easily the most hilarious ep I’ve seen.

형도니가 랩을 한다 호옹 호옹 호옹
Hyung Don is rapping. Ho-ong Ho-ong
지용이가 랩을 한다 호옹 호옹 호옹
Jiyong is rapping. Ho-ong Ho-ong
우리같이 랩을 한다 호옹 호옹 호옹
We are rapping together. Ho-ong Ho-ong
보고 있나? 듣고 있나?
Are you looking? Are you listening?

엉아야 호옹 엉아 엉아 엉아 HEY
Ong-ah-ya ho-ong ong-ah ong-ah ong-ah HEY
엉아야 호옹 엉아 엉아 엉아 HEY
Ong-ah-ya ho-ong ong-ah ong-ah ong-ah HEY

아직까지 형도니가 랩을 한다
Hyung Don is still rapping
아직까지 지용이도 랩을 한다
Jiyong is still rapping too
안끝났다 좀 더 있다 랩이 있다
It’s not finished, there’s still a bit more, more rapping
시작한다 좀 더 있다 춤이 있다
It’s starting, there’s still abit more, more dancing
춤 출게요
I’ll dance
호옹 호옹 호옹 춤 출게요
Ho-ong Ho-ong Ho-ong I’ll dance
어떻게든 해볼라고
No matter how, try to do something
호옹 호옹 호옹 호옹 호옹 호옹
Ho-ong Ho-ong Ho-ong Ho-ong Ho-ong Ho-ong
춤 출게요
I’ll dance
뭐 좀 해볼라고
Trying to do something
호옹 호옹 호옹 호옹 호옹 호옹
Ho-ong Ho-ong Ho-ong Ho-ong Ho-ong Ho-ong
어떻게든 해볼라고
No matter how, try to do something

I love this song!!! HAHA. Last pang is when the game is over and they clear the last few pieces? Anyway the way 형돈 sings it is like how the sound effect is in the game!

매의눈 is also related to 유희열 haha it’s quite popular in korea! From the IU episode where he was giving her the hawk’s eye. I think if you google 매의눈 he comes out? But don’t know if they wrote it cos of that hahaha

& 형돈 sometimes goes by 도니 also. Like the 주간아이돌 segment 도니코니뽀미후니의 알랑가몰라 들중 하나 ㅋㅋㅋㅋ but Koreans like to move the consonant, I think it’s a form of aegyo? Like 일훈이 -> 일후니

Super love the 엉아 (형아) part hehehehe so cute

Now it’s a bit obvious that I am a 예능프로 addict. This comment is too long hahahaha.

    Hey Shanna!

Thanks for this post! I’m a huge BIGBANG and Winner fan. Really appreciate the translations. Now I understand why GD was laughing away. I tried doing 1 translation for Winner but I lost steam and it’s still sitting in my drafts folder. Pretty sad that Hyungdon has to stop all his activities. I really like his shows.

I’m always secretly happy when I find a Singaporean VIP.

    Cheers
    J
