But I’m glad Brown and Cony are the ones with the loveline.
In case you have no idea what I’m talking about, you are missing out on a great messaging app, LINE. The best, in my honest opinion.
LINE has just about the same functions as other messenger apps but what differentiate it from the rest are the pretty UI and the stickers. Yeah. The stickers.
It’s amazing that a set of characters designed for a messenger app can end up having such huge popularity that a whole set of merchandise is created, along with cartoon episodes and what not.
I’m a huge fan in general, so much so that one of my main goals when I visited Japan was to find the official LINE merchandise. You can find my blog post on it here >> “Where to get LINE character goods in Japan” and I also remember writing about the app a year ago HERE (linked).
Yeah, I’m so interested that I even went to google to find out who is the ingenious designer behind the stickers. Normally people won’t actually do that right? So this really says how much I love those stickers.
My googling skills in Japanese must be getting better, cos I found this:
Basically it was an interview in 2012 with the main designer Kan-san (カンさん) and he talked about the initial concept and idea behind the stickers!
This is apparently his self portrait.
In the interview, he mentioned that there weren’t any particular people that the characters were modeled after, but the characters showcased a whole range of emotions that people from all over the world can identify with. In essence, the stickers were aiming to express “global body language”「グローバルなボディーランゲージ」. Apparently they researched on which particular stickers were the most popular in each of the 4 main character sets, and for Cony’s series, the most popular one was Cony farting (lol) and that came as a surprise to Kan-san. hahaha.
Kan-san also mentioned that James was supposed to have a girlfriend but in the end, it was Brown and Cony who got the loveline. Poor James. Perhaps that accounts for the relatively larger number of 頹廢 stickers for James. (I especially love the one where he had wind blowing through a hole in his body)
I think Kan-san is really amazing to capture the whole range of emoticons in those stickers. The bff and I suspect that there are more connections or an overarching story behind the stickers, since many of them look kinda connected. One fun thing is that we can try to weave our own stories / interpretations with the stickers, which is what we have been doing.
To see James’s girlfriend and also some of the initial drawings of the characters, go to the original article linked above!
If you are not already using LINE (how can that be?!), go download it!
