7 In Korean learning journey (:

Honest comments ^^

As much as I love people/Koreans telling me that my Korean is very good *ahem*, I love honest comments even more. Please criticize me. Constructive criticisms of course.

Someone left me a message on the Korean blog saying:

그런데 올해 초에 올리신 글들에는 조사(품사)가 어색한 것들이 좀 많더군요.
그 시기엔 한국어를 많이 잊었던 것 같아 안타깝습니다.

Okay, that wasn’t the full message but it’s a very important part. To be honest, I’ve been really slack with my Korean studying, being more passive rather than active intensive studying.

This message is like a wake-up call to me. x.x

Okay, I shall spend more time today on Korean. One reason why I’m so stagnant about K-studying is because I don’t really know what to study anymore or what book to use. ><;;

There’s so many things that I dunno yet but it’s just hard to .. make a studying plan? Or whatever you call that.

    How about akatt? Have u heard of ajatt? At this point I think you should stop using those books, stop studying in a formal way”. You just need more vocabulary and whatever grammar that somehow slipped by you. I would recommend doing whatever the hell you want in Korean ie watch dramas, read novels in Korean; etc and learn words with anki. You just seem at a high level I really think the studying with books is just slowing you down. I really think you just need immersion and I’m sure it would be enjoyable

      hello! yeah I’m doing a lot of external reading but I’m still trying to kinda prepare for TOPIK 6. They test a lot of weird grammar points that I’ve never really seen used in normal circumstances, so I still have to rely on my grammar book for that. I’m also trying to brush up all my proverbs etc XD I’ve been watching a lot of unsubbed stuff and generally reading korean news articles.

    I remember you saying oh I hope I get as good in japanese as I am in Korean so it’ll be that i can speak 4 languages. I know people who learn japanese and they study hard with RTK and core 6000 (vocabulary thing) and all this but they don’t do ajatt so all they do is just study the language and then they wonder why they can’t understand anything even though they memorized 6000 words or whatever. It’s so silly. but anyways, for Japanese I would say it’s the same thing, you have to learn a lot of words and and all the grammar and obviously the commonsensical way to go on about learning all those words is finding something enjoyable in japanese and doing it and learn from it. I mean that is what I did. The only studying was Tae Kim as far as grammar. The other grammar stuff he didn’t cover that I came across, I looked it up, came across it, etc, and I learned it. You are doing that, but I feel like you base too much on formal book studying. I understand have different approaches to learning languages but as far as reaching fluency you need a lot of input and immersion if you’re ever going to learn all the common daily words etc etc. I would just say look into ajatt

      thanks for the advice! yeah I’m actually relying a lot of external material besides books for Japanese! Right now I’m watching a lot of dramas and reading loads – from news articles, drama notes, and random japanese websites etc. ^^

        I see. well if the situation is different with Japanese… that you’re just learning it for yourself and you don’t have to pass exams then you should look into more of that and less of book studying. If you haven’t seen yet the shabekuri episode with tbsk is hiliarious~
