Sometimes I think naming the posts appropriately is the hardest thing to do in blogging -.- Me being me, I’ll just anyhow name it!

First things first!!
I FINALLY BOUGHT BYAKUYAKO／白夜行！！！！
I think no one remembers, but I may have said it in the blog before that my goal in learning Japanese is to be able to read the original novel!!! Backtrack. Byakuyako is one of my favorite all time Japanese dramas. I got to know about it first by watching the Korean movie White Night (based on the same novel). I loved it but when I watched the Japanese drama, I was mind blown. Went on to read the entire novel in Chinese (translated version), swearing one day I’ll read it in its original language.
So tada. Bought it! I’ve been struggling with myself whether to buy it or not for a year already (yeah I’m lame like this). Finally decided to heck reason and bought it!!! It’s not that hard to read (so far). Finished a few pages without a dictionary on the train ride home. Kinda understand 90% of it, although not the kanji readings. Did a intensive reading again at night and finished 2 pages. Intensive reading as in really checking out each and every kanji that I don’t know how to pronounce and all the other words etc. (making sure that I understand 99% of everything)
99% because I’m so lazy I ignored readings for things like 西布施警察署. In case you wondered, I typed that in Chinese lol.
hehe I always believe that nothing is too difficult for me in Korean and hence trying to apply the same reasoning to Japanese. Everyone can tell me that it’s above my level, but too bad. I’m challenging myself and going for it. I love my steep learning curves. heh it’s readable so far anyway.
Okay! Picture time.
This is ice kachang, sorta the Singapore version of Patbingsu? hahahaha. This one was damn nice though. I love my ice shavings fine, hate eating bits of hard ice. -_-
Also. Tim Sum time the other day!! 😀 😀 Egg tarts. Not my favorite dim sum menu, but not too bad once in a while.
Yummy. I love anything with prawns in them.
My all time favorite dim sum menu!!! I can eat baskets of this.

haha of course I’ll only sit there on a empty weekend breezy afternoon. Can’t imagine sitting there under the hot sun on a weekday lunch hour – with all the office people bustling around :/

1 April, 2013 at 10:42 AMI absolutely agree. Pushing yourself makes you learn a lot faster. Intensive reading is so valuable for language acquisition. I think “Levels” are just limitations people set for themselves.
東野圭吾 is one of my favorite Japanese authors, but I haven’t read 白夜行. If you like his mystery work, I’d like to recommend 容疑者Xの献身 and 赤い指.

I’m glad you posted this because I just bought some textbooks and they are a bit difficult for me… I can do them with a dictionary if I go slowly. I was worried I’d made a terrible mistake but this is encouraging! Haha

1 April, 2013 at 8:10 PMThat’s true 🙂 if you just sit back and wait for the knowledge of the language to come to you ; your wasting your time you can’t just do 20 minutes study every few days and think *I should be able to learn this real quick* NO you gotta really push yourself and read and make everything you do a learning experience!!!
Or your just wasting your time ^^

2 April, 2013 at 5:15 AMI agree with challenging yourself. I attempt to do a bit of reading here and there and I barely understand anything. But, I like going over the text and discover that I can understand more after a bit of work.
I am far from the 90% mark (lucky you for already having a comprehension of Chinese characters) but I will get there ^^

4 April, 2013 at 8:20 AMthere’s probably no furigana in it soi’m sure there will be a lot of i know what this means but i don’t know how you read it in japanese. i agree with your instincts that if it’s a name of a place or even a character’s name (usually they do tell you the reading in the first instance and then i forget lol) i wouldn’t bother looking up the reading of the kanji… you can definitely spend your time on more useful stuff when it comes to your japanese learning. actually for me i didn’t read a book with furigana in it in japanese till my 60-th-something lol.
