9 In Korean learning journey (:

An interesting experience!

Yesterday, I had a really interesting experience 😀

I taught basic Korean to my fellow uni students!!

hahaha. This was really unexpected.

Our university club has a Korean class program whereby the Korean exchange students teach Korean to interested students. This semester’s program just started this week and the exchange students who were supposed to take the basic class on Fri couldn’t make it. Substitutes could not be found so I was asked if I could take over the class for that day.

My first reaction was like ERRR???!!!

I was really worried that the students will not like a Singaporean teaching them Korean. It just feels weird, particularly since I haven’t been to Korea for extended periods of time. I was supposed to teach the basic consonants and vowels xD

I could sort of sense skeptism when I told the class that I’m going to be the teacher for the day. And then something funny happened.

The Korean girl who was supposed to teach the intermediate class came into my room and she was like ‘언니, (followed by a string of rapid Korean)’. So naturally, I just replied in Korean and we continued the convo for awhile. I can’t remember what we were talking about, but I had the impression then that she mistook me for a Korean.

So I said ‘음.. 저는 싱가폴 사람이에요’. And she immediately gave me a super stunned look of disbelief and told me that she thought I was a third gen Korean.

hahahahaha. which totally made my day 😀

The trip to Korea really helped me improve my Korean! ^^ Although I’m still nowhere to being fluent.

This incident also helped reassure my students that I can at least teach them the Korean alphabet 😀

Another funny thing is that the Korean girl kept forgetting that I’m not a Korean throughout the evening. 😀 😀

yay!

As a beginner, I know I’m not good in Korean. But I can say that you really sound like a Korean (in TTMIK ^^). Really envy you a lot hehe. I hope i can take a class in Korea too, but when I heard about the amount that you spend to take a class in Yonsei…. I suddenly realize that i should stop dreaming about going to take a class in Korea 유_유. I can’t afford to make that much money, but still, my love in learning Korean will never stop!!!
