7 years into learning Korean and I still feel so inadequate.
Instead of being discouraged, I actually love this feeling. I see progress, and yet I know there’s still a long long road ahead. It makes me look forward to how much more I can go on and how much better I can get.
TIP: When in a language bottleneck, get a new insanely challenging novel!
I’m probably insane but I love how barely half a page into the novel, I’ve highlighted 25 words (including the chapter title)! I haven’t highlighted so much for a body of Korean text for quite some time. HAHAHA I’m so excited that I practically didn’t understand anything that I’ve just read.
It’s like.. CHALLENGE ACCEPTED.
I will conquer you.
To be honest, I didn’t know what the novel is about when I bought it (and I still don’t).
How I choose k-novels:
- Go to Kyobo website –> bestseller list
- Look at the books with loads of good reviews (I didn’t read the reviews)
- From the shortlisted list, randomly pick one with an interesting sounding title and cover page
hahahaha. Sorry if it’s very superficial. But it’s really not a bad method since I don’t restrict myself to any genre or type of writing. 😛
For those who are currently debating with yourself on whether to get a novel or not, just do it! The fun of reading (in a foreign language) lies in not quite knowing what you are reading. 😛
And the immense satisfaction when you finally figured out.

27 November, 2015 at 6:05 PMThis reminds me that I should start at least one of the novels I own. I’ve been trying to be too systematic with my learning. (Don’t read this book until you finish this level; you can’t do level 3 until you finish level 2.) And I’ve been able to understand a lot of things above my level. Out of everything I have, 세상에 너를 소리쳐 might be the easiest. I can’t wait to start 우행시 and 여덟단어. ^^
