I blogged about ‘What you need to know about 음식배달’ last year and by now, I’m getting pretty good at ordering delivery. ㅎ
Food that I have ordered: 감자탕, pizza, 부대찌개 (which does come in the stone pot), 김밥, 파전, 족발, 도시락, 떡볶이, 짜자명, 냉면, 콩국수 etc etc
I’m going to share how I order food (and what’s the typical phone convo like) because it’s really kinda nerve wrecking during your first phone call…
In summer 2010, I was in Yonsei and being my first time in Korea, my spoken Korean was still awkward. It was 12am, and my Singaporean friends and I were in the dorm, hungry.
Friend: ‘Let’s order fried chicken!!’ *waves delivery phamplet*
us: okay!!
Friend: Eh Shanna! Go order. You are the only one among us who can speak Korean
Me: ermm. okay. shit
I had no idea what to do, so first, I dug out the address of the SK global house. Which was kinda funny, cos there are two different addresses for it. So, I called. I remembered that I was trying so hard to say the address and my pronunciation was probably not accurate enough – all the 서대문구, xx동, xx로. Basically I spent 5 min over the phone trying to tell the other person that we were in SK global house, but no luck since the person had zero idea. The boss even asked another guy who could speak Chinese to talk to me. EMBARRASSED.
In the end we got our chicken. And the guywhocanspeakChinese actually texted me afterwards and says he wanna be friends. -.-
In any case, weird experience.
So, let me show you how I do it nowadays. I have a routine now ㅋㅋㅋ
Here’s how the convo can run.
Scenario 1 – ordering from a traditional Korean restaurant / non chain / 분식집
Owner: 네~?
Me: 배달 가능하세요?
Owner: 네~ 어디세요?
Me: 여기가 홍대 사거리 모모 오피스텔이에요. 203호
Owner: 주문 어떻게 되세요?
Me: 갈비탕 하나 부대찌개 하나 주세요
Owner: 갈비탕 하나 부대찌개 하나요?
Me: 네!
Onwer: 네~
hehe yes I over-ordered and ate everything by myself….
This is how the order came. Bowls wrapped nicely in clear plastic. You have to return the bowls (a plastic bag is given) by placing everything outside the door after you are done.
Scenario 2 – Ordering pizza or from a chain
More challenging, since they have a ‘standard’ way of taking orders and they can speak really fast!
Girl: 네~ 고객님! 아바로 피자입니다!
Me: 배달 가능하세요?
Girl: 네, 고객님. 주소 어떻게 되세요?
Me: 여기가 홍대 사거리 모모 오피스텔이에요. 203호
Girl: 네~ 주문이 어떻게 되세요?
Me: 하와이언 피자 하나 주세요
Girl: 사이즈가 어떻게 되세요?
Me: Large (라지)요
Girl: 콜라 필요하세요?
Me: 아니요
Girl: 네~ 하와이언 파자 라지 하나 맞으세요?
Me: 네~
Girl: 17,500원이에요. 카드 결제 필요하세요?
Me: 아니요.
Girl: 네~ 30분 안에 배달해 드리겠습니다. 맛있게 드세요!
Okay.. I didn’t do this very well. Sorry I’m not a Korean…
I assume that people who will attempt the call at least know how to read hangul, so I’m not translating this. #lazy

11 September, 2012 at 7:10 AMI was wondering if you ever experienced first language atrophy with the korean (the more you get good at korean, the worse you get~~~). bTW which is your best language, chinese or english? Well maybe not to the point of atrophy but you know affecting your ability to output english. My input isn’t really affected but my output is shittier than before.
For me I’m getting really really shitty at recalling words in english so either I give up or I just come up with another word English which just happens to be a difficult word but it fills the same purpose (sometimes it’s better to keep it simple for everyone to understand but I can only spend so much time in a conversation trying to recall this word). for me it’s the Japanese that I’ve been really getting good at. I can just spend my whole day in Japanese and that would be enjoyable… (tv shows, books, internet articles, music, drama, talk/variety shows, etc) However, I don’t feel fluent in Japanese as in I don’t feel like my output is 100% correct all the time but I am pretty sure whatever i say will be understood even if it’s a little off (通じる) or incorrect.
Oh and if you already posted about this article, I’m sorry for asking for a redundant question but then again what words would i search for (there’s so many ways to word this).

11 September, 2012 at 9:25 AMthat’s an interesting thing to think about xD mmm I think my best language will be English, since I’m always using it, with friends, in school etc. I no longer write in Chinese (unless you count hanja and kanji), so I think my Chinese is getting a little horrible. But I wont really attribute that to Korean.
But sometimes I do find it easier to say a Korean word or phrase when I’m talking in English. And I get more of the ‘tip of the tongue’ situations with English than in Korean. o.o
My Korean output is not 100% too! Especially the longer I talk, the more awkward my Korean gets. It’s like my brain has decided to stop processing the language.

Just thought I point that out since many of your readers (like myself) are learning korean and 카트 refers to cart instead. I think you are already on your way to have korean as your main language. 🙂
