30th TOPIK – exam day!

8am, arrived at the SKIS. 4 packets of tissues and 4 hours later, I’m done with the 30th TOPIK advanced paper and on the bus home.

So how was the paper? I dont really know. I spent majority of my time sneezing and blowing my nose all the way. I think i put in more effort into trying to mimimize disturbance during the listening part. Must have incurred the wrath of my fellow test takers. Sorry D:

First things first. I MANAGED TO BRING HOME ANOTHER MARKER PEN. Hahahaha bringing home the OAS marker pen seems to be a routine for me. Spoils of war? Lol I carry the previous two pens around in my pencil case ^^ We were asked to return the pens but I made sure I zipped my pencil case and concentrated on blowing my nose lolol. 아싸!

Okay, now on to more mundane things 😛 There were supposed to be 18 of us, but 5 didnt turn up (I was nearly one of them too, to be honest). Quite a fair mix of Koreans and foreigners in the original list (:

I’m going to pay the price for refusing to revise the advanced grammar points. I knew I was weak in that, but yeah… Pretty surprised that I got through the vocab quite well. All that reading must have paid off.

As usual, that 3 questions was like.. horrible. Might have screwed up my essay. My brain was so hazy that I had no structure in the essay and I sound like a kindergarten kid desperately repeating herself. I actually had one hour to do the essay but I was like …. …. ….. . . . so in the end I didn’t really complete the section early.

Quite surprised that I actually survived despite my cold getting worse. I wasnt even concentrating but I know what they were talking about. Normally, I’ll read the next question (and the mcq choices) ahead of the question during the pause between the end of the previous question and start of the next. For the last two TOPIK tries, it was a little difficult to absorb everything and I usually only had time to read the question + 2 choices before the audio starts again. But this time, I didn’t have to read single choice in detail but I can roughly get what each choice is about just by looking at it. Erm hard to explain. But I think it’s a good improvement. I’ve been trying to train my “Korean scanning skills” and I think I’m getting there.

Can feel an improvement (hopefully it’s not my hallucination). All the reading helped and I can understand the passages on ancient Korean culture because of 전우치!!! ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

Overall I definitely feel that I’m much better compared to last year. The paper felt a lot more manageable and no longer ‘out of reach’ and I can do it more.. 여유있게. ㅋㅋㅋ I wasn’t dead (mentally) by the end of the paper!! But the cold definitely affected me ): oh well. Not going to blame the cold though. If Im really good enough the cold shouldnt bother me.

Great. I’ve just finished the 5th packet of tissues and I’m nearly home ^^ Shall get lunch, sleep and hopefully wake up miraculously cured so that I can meet my friend and eat udon at night hahaha 😀

p.s Doing TOPIK made me fall in love with Korean all over again <3

p.p.s Now that TOPIK is over, it’s time to prepare for JLPT N3!! hehehe knowing me, I’ll somehow be studying Korean near that period of time, so I might as well start preparing now!

This was my first experience .Didn’t know must use a black marker for multiple choice & was given one. So writing is in the 1st 90mins paper. Hearing & reading is the next 90 mins paper. Realised that after doing the paper, you really have to study very diligently let’s say you decide to take TOPIK. This experience is a good experience.

yeahh it was pretty unsettling that you can’t exactly change your answers. Well, can use correction tape but it looks pretty bad if the sheet if full of correction tape marks hahaha.

heh actually 30th literally means it’s the 30th time the exam is being held. I guess TOPIK is kinda new so they have this counting system still 😛 I’ve taken the 16th, 26th and the 30th! 😛

Hello, i have to admit i love your blog and i have been wondering for sometime how did you begin to approch learning korean? Did you focus on grammar or vocabulary/premade phrases? I am very curious because i am in love with the korean language but i feel like im aimlessly wondering into a deep forest(im lost with no direction). Thanks in advance.

btw i cant wait to hear your results from the test. Im sure you did well :3

Thanks Jodi! (: I touched on everything to be honest. Focusing slightly more on grammar at the start though. I wrote an ebook called “How to Self study Korean”. You can search the blog and check it out! (It’s free haha)

Ooh in my anxiety it didn’t cross my mind that we’ll be taking the test in the same room! I didn’t know there were so few people taking 고급.

Funny you took the marker back home; I took the teacher’s correction pen home :X

I nearly died when I saw the 쓰기 title. Because I predicted it. I read through some articles on the subject because I felt compelled to for some strange reason. What were the odds?!?! Tragically, because I thought such a topic can’t possibly be chosen, I read those articles mindlessly. Oh how I regretted it. I nearly kicked myself when I saw the topic on the exam paper. I am still kicking myself now.

I don’t think you were sniffling very loudly cos I didn’t notice anyone sniffling. Perhaps I was just too overwhelmed by the stifling atmosphere from the aircon being turned off…

All the best for your JLPT! Oh, you know what makes watching dramas without subtitles more fun? Watching them with jap subtitles. You can find some here: http://jpsubbers.x10.mx/Japanese-Subtitles/

I think my main problem was losing steam… I started to get distracted after a while, probably because it has been a looooong time since I’ve taken any written test… haha 😡 So yeah, time was my biggest issue. If you had one hour for the essay, you probably aced it 😉

And it is heartening to know that I’m not the only one with the queer problem. Each time I need to study Korean say, for a test, I start to be more interested in other languages and end up studying Japanese and picking up new ones. I started becoming so interested in Jp and French just before TOPIK. Now TOPIK is over and I have to prepare for my interview with a Japanese company, I suddenly have this desire to finish reading some Korean novels and ditch the infinitely-more-impt Jp study. WHY OH WHY.

It seems the closer you get to a language exam, the more you are attracted to the other language. I almost expect reading more Korean learning near the JLPT test.

I hope the results will great despite the cold. If so, doing great Korean with sick means a closer step to native abilities…?
