Enjoying a peaceful Saturday and trying to reduce the time spent on the comp (it’s not working).
New bedtime reading!! ^^
You guys should know that I’m always very fascinated with anything related to the Korean language and this book is really the best (or perhaps only?) comprehensive account of the history of the Korean language (written in English). Ramsey won’t be an unfamiliar name for those who have been keeping up with academic books written on Korean.
The book is really awesome and just a few chapters in, I’m already learning so much about the possible origins of Korean and old Korean. 😀 One thing I dislike is the use of romanization (and the kind that I don’t understand) in the book, but ohwell, it’s academia standard. But I’m glad they use 한글 and Chinese characters where possible too! Personally I’m horrible at IPA (never like learning it) but I think I should brush up that knowledge if I want to know in details how Korean sounds like etc.
I’m really super glad that I can read most stuff in Korean now. So I’m also googling for readings in Korean to supplement what I’m learning from the book!
I’ve never been so hardworking in my undergraduate studies lolol.

In any case, I’ve just finished 3 chapters and now planning to study TOPIK, read about Korean history and/or watch drama.
I’m totally addicted to 7급 공무원, so much so that I even want to rewatch ep 6 (already!) and buy the 사진만화 if it comes out. hehehe. I love the *ahem* cast.
I need to get my eyes off the comp though D:
Will be back next week~~~!
새해 복 많이 많이 많이~~~~~ 받으세요!

10 February, 2013 at 4:28 AMhey I was wondering how you learn from korean dramas. I would imagine there would be words or phrases or grammar that pop up that you don’t know in the drama or stuff you can’t catch what they say. or is your korean really good that you can infer it or that never happens??

13 February, 2013 at 5:52 PMI can’t stand the romanizations either… they don’t normally use IPA, which might not be as bad, but a transliteration which is just awful…. e.g. kulus-ul kkayttuli-e peli-essta, I found that one in a paper I read recently…I took me a bit to parse it and get 그릇을 깨뜨려 버렸다! Fortunately I don’t have to put up with the romanizations now in the Korean phonology book I just bought…

14 February, 2013 at 2:59 AMWow, that’s taking hopeless romanisation to a whole new level. You ought to get some sort of prize for figuring out the underlying 한글.
